I want to check the ignition timing is right on my 924 - can someone give me the right procedure and settings (or where the marks are) please? I had a quick search but didn't find anything.
Is it done with vacuum hose on or off?

Basically mine runs fine, but can be a bit*h to start! It sorta kicks back on the starter, almost as if the firing stroke wants to reverse the direction of the engine when engaging the starter. It isn't the starter thats had it either, as it turns over fine with the ignition disconnected..... Having had cars before that have done similar when the ignition timing was out, I want to check it thoroughly to make sure it is spot on.

easiest way to set static timing is this:

Line up three things:

1) Edge of rotor in distributor with small hash mark on rim of distributor (need to remove cap to see mark in rim)
2) Dot on *rear* of cam pulley with pointer on valve cover
3) Mark on crank pulley with pointer on block

OK, thank you.
With static timing set close enough - how do you set the dynamic timing with a strobe light? where are the marks and what to do with vaccum hose?

Timing/vacuum hose varies, you need to post year/model of your car.

If yours is a post-1980 Euro (possibly earlier models as well, I am not sure), then you want 10 degrees BTDC, vacuum line off.

Marks are on the flywheel, visible through the small window - see below. The marks line up with the L-shaped notch in the window.

There are 3 marks (-10) (0) (+10). I can't remember if it's -10 or +10 you want, but first find the center mark (0), then turn engine counter-clockwise until the next mark appears in the window. This is the mark you use.

Mine is a standard 1984 normally aspirated 924 with a single vaccum connection to the dizzy.

Thanks for the post above, I will have a look for the marks in the window and see what comes up - then set to 10deg BTDC, vaccum line off (and plugged?)

Job done thanks for the pointers - found the marks and set it with a timing light.... it was slightly off. Will see how it behaves going forward.
