Ok folks, this is going to be a bit of a post. Here's the story...

I've been trying to figure out what a 1986 FIA rating meant on a driver's suit and was having little or no luck figuring out what the FIA rating numbers meant on the back of the collar. In particular, how might an FIA rating relate to the SFI rating commonly found here in the US. So, I've spent a bit of time figuring it out and thought I'd record my findings for anyone else who might find themselves in the same spot. THIS IS BY NO MEANS AN EXHAUSTIVE DISSERTATION ON THE SUBJECT. Just a starting point for the racer who wants to know more.

For those of you who are familiar with the SFI rating, driver's suits in the USA receive a rating like 3.2a/X where 3.2a is the standard against which the suit is tested and X is the rating. The X can be 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, etc. with the higher number indicating greater resistance to burn. There is also a TPP number which when divided by 2 indicates the approximate number of seconds before a 2nd degree burn. Please read the details on any website that carries SFI rated drivers suits.

However, there is another rating used moreso in Europe, the FIA rating and there are lots of very nice suits out there that are FIA rated but not SFI rated. I was having a very difficult time figuring out which was better, or for that matter what might be comparable or different between the two ratings.

Despite google and several other very robust tools, I found that it was very difficult to figure this out. So, for those of you who want to know about the FIA rating, here is what I've found...

The FIA rating number is sewn into the collar of the driver's suit. There are 4 parts to the rating number. AA.BBB.CCCc.DD, where AA.BBB are some kind of sequence number, CCCc is a three or four letter code indicating the national sanctioning body like CSAI for Italy or JAF for Japan, and DD is the year in which the rating was issued.

The rating is assigned to each individual suit style created by a manufacturer. So, for example, for the manufacturer called MOMO and a suit called "Corse", it received its own rating from FIA -- 05.178.CSAI.93. And that is what I find on the collar of my MOMO Corse driving suit. If you take the numbers on your FIA approved suit and look at the list below, you will find a listing for your suit. However, I think this list is for 1986 spec FIA ratings only -- not the later FIA ratings that have come out recently (I've not looked into these ratings..., sorry)

Also, it appears that there is a TPP rating as well, called TPS? (Sorry, I don't know all the abbreviations as this was translated from Spanish...) In the MOMO example above, the TPS rating is 16.5 or about 8 seconds before second degree burn. This is comparable to a 3.2a/5 two layer suit from a reputable manufacturer.

I would recommend searching for your FIA number rather than purusing the list. It is just too long. Good luck...
