Well, after correctly getting the diagnosis of the bad WUR, I had it replaced with a rebuild, as you know.

She ran sterling after that (two weeks). Fantastic. Until yesterday. Drove her home in the afternoon. Couple hours later went out and she wouldn't start. Turn over, yes but no start. Waited a few more hours. (Although, it wasn't real hot here today and she's been running great in hot, hot weather). Still nothing. This A.M. same freakin story.

As you know I'm not great yet under the hood. But all the fluids are great. The belts are great. Everything looks like it's in it's proper place. Oh, except a hose that's come undone but can't tell where it's supposed to go. But it's been undone for weeks, since I got the car back from the shop, and it didn't affect anything.

I don't get it!!!! Any suggestions, ideas, theories?

Thanks,

Christopher

can you hear the fuel pump running? I can power up my fuel pump on my 80 931 with the power mirror switch. I`ve heard that a few others can do the same also. Check the basics first....gas + spark.

Just because the fuel pumps are new, doesn`t mean that they are running when you turn the key

The fuel pump relay could have crapped out on you. It doesn`t start at all now, right? Check for spark too.

Black sooty plugs, usually indicates a rich running condition...has nothing to do with the fuel pumps.

Cool. When I turn the key what should I listen for in terms of the pump?

Smoothie you are so dope. I can't believe you have those sounds recorded. Now the problem is that it says that the page is unavailable for both links.

Ok pasted em and they worked. I'd hear either of those right before I cranked the key?

At the start of both recordings is the sound of the fuel pumps alone for 1-2 seconds before the engine is started. You should hear the pump breifly like that either when you turn the key just to "on" or move the electric mirror adjust switch on the door panel as jpab mentioned.

Yup followed you all on that. It's difficult to make out over the buzzer and the fans kicking in but I'm pretty sure I'm hearing something that sounds more like the non-bosch. Last few times I've gone out to try it - I get a sputtering like it wants to start but it never gets to full start - no matter how much gas I give it or how little it - then just reverts to the starter turning over.

Hey smoothie you remember when you recomended the Techron to me when I had to replace my WUR. Well after I had the new WUR I did just that. Added the Techron additive to the tank that was almost empty and filled it up. This can't have anything to do with this fit it's throwing?

I mean I got a few not quite sputters but kinda small haltings from her after the additive - but figured it was just part of processing out any contaminants.

The Techron wouldn't have anything to do with your problem unless it helped to loosen up an accumulation of varnish somewhere which then moved on to clog something.
At this point I'd have the CIS tester on it. Assuming you don't have one, next would be to jumper the fuel pump on at the fuse/relay board (and verify that it is running)** and press down on the air metering plate - you should then hear fuel running through the fuel distributor, if not, either the pump/s aren't working or the fuel distributor is completely clogged. If you do hear the fuel running through, next would be to pull (unscrew) and check each injector for fuel spray and pattern. Pull them all and put each (reconnected to the lines) into a glass jar, jumper the fuel pump at the fuse/relay board, and press down on the air metering plate to make the injectors squirt. If any aren't spraying at all, remove that one from the line and check for fuel flow through that line. If no fuel flow through the line, suspect a clog within the fuel distributor. If just the injector is clogged, try giving it a good soaking in acetone. -Same for any that are squirting, but don't show a good spray pattern - try soaking them also.

At the "**" in the previous post, you could of course just try starting it again at that point. If it starts with the fuel pump jumpered-on, you most likely have a bad fuel pump relay.

Applebit, a member on this board had similar symptoms. It turned out to be his fuel pump relay. Not saying that this is your problem, but a good place to start.

Smoothie advised to jumper the relay. Locate the relay on the fuse/relay board and pull it out. Make a note how it comes out and look at the terminal end of the relay. You will see some numbers on this end. Locate 30 and 87 on the relay and look where you pulled the relay out and jumper these two together and see if the car starts. You will be essentially by-passing the relay. I reccomend you make a jumper wire for this.

When hooking up the jumper wire, I would hook it up to pin 87 first. This is the circuit for the fuel pump. Then hook it up to pin 30, which is battery power and hot at all times. I say this because I would not want you to accidently short pin 30 and burn your circuit wire.

Thanks you guys tons. That was incredibly helpful. Smoothie always rocks. Anyhow, Jpab got it. It turned out that it was the fuel pump relay. Running great!

Thanks again. You rule.

Nice to hear that the car is running again. You know, its always nice to hear a resolution to a problem. So many people here on this forum ask for advice, and you never hear if the advice given to them resolved their issue. And you are often left wondering....
