| My friend is an avid rally racer. He owns a Ford Fiesta and a Subaru which he races.Rally racing is an affordable alternative to SCCA track racing or time trialing around cones in a parking lot. I went with him on a rally and its very technical and demanding-checkpoints and navigation. All types of cars participated-from full size Blazers to subcompacts and there were NO RESTRICTIONS on bodywork or engine mods. Some guy drove his brand new WRX Subaru off the road and into a ditch so driving skill is more important than horsepower. My friends 1977 Fiesta is a four banger front wheel drive that sits as low as a Porsche and he was throwing that thing around like nobody's business. He finished in the top fifteen with a car that cost less than just about every other car competing and was twice as ugly.A properly prepared 924 with a good driver would be very competitive.Think outside the box. |

| Thanks for the links wdb. There is a lot of regional racing going on and our 924s are not being represented.Forget track racing because our cars are apparently not competitive enough in stock form, and according to Vaughn they are not even eligible. Our cars are designed to be driven not ridiculed.Rally racing and autocrossing allows our cars to compete with the minimum of cash and the maximum of pleasure.Cruise some regional club sites and get involved.Check out all the different types of cars to compete against-summer is coming. WDB,do you rally or autocross your Porsche? |

| The race I was involved in was strictly "run what you brung" and the only safety equipment required was fog lights.Racing took place on rural mountain roads, some paved and some not.We were kicking up some dirt on the gravel sections so if you are worried about scratching the paint on your car, stick to autocrossing.GPS systems were the only devices not allowed in the race. Door mounted magnetic number decals were provided to identify cars and drivers at checkpoints. Participants helped each other when mechanical trouble arose and that recovery strap was a welcome tool when pulling that WRX out of the ditch. |

Thanks for the links! I plan to take take one of my cars out to one of the Houston events when they get their schedule finalized.
http://www.houscca.com/rallycross/rallycross.html
Does anyone know if a 944 lower engine shield would fit a 924, or would it affect cooling? Since the Houston track is flat but sandy, I will run the car in it's current lowered stance so I am looking for ways to protect the brake lines, CV joints, etc. from rocks and roots. I may just get some sheet metal and cut to shape.

I think they are the same...sheet metal for the 924 and aluminum for the 944...I've got a couple laying around. I don't know a single car with one still on it.

your very welcome for the links,I'm still intrigued by the net. If your gonna build a skid plate for the under carriage ,might check out 4x4 and off roading sites and copy proven designs, I dont think street tires will hold up to a really tough course, make friends with your local used tire man or maybe look into the heavy duty tires made for lowboy trailers, thier made for heavy koads so maybe thier thicker or more durable. one important thing, nascar drivers walk away from 150 MPH crashes into solid concrete, yet people on our highways arent so lucky, get a roll cage that covers your door, even if its not required.it makes the difference. sitting here thinking about a place and people who will actually encourage me to drive like a maniac.and not only not put me in jail (btdt) a pretty girl might hand me a shinny new trophy, slidding around a curve at 50,rocks flying, people running, AAARRRR AAARRRR AAARRRR. oh a your welcome

Yes, safety is my number one concern. I am buying a racing seat and 5 point harness, and I won't do any high speed events, on or off road, before getting a roll cage.
I will check around and see what I can come up with for skid plates. I don't know exactly what kind of racing I want to do, but it's fun having a car that can handle almost anything! |

I kept the lower enging guard off a 78 that I sold. It is going on the 80 931 that BodyShopRob and I plan to race this year. I have provided the car and Rob is providing racing seats and other parts. The car is getting stripped today (17 Jan 02). This is the "Community Car" that I offered up just so 924/931 owners in the Seattle, WA area could get together learn and in the process have some fun.

BC,
The 944 undertray can be fittd to the 924.
I run a aluminium 944 under tray on my GT - two reasons - one to save weight and 2nd I've cut the sides off it to allow for my additional oil lines to run into and out of the engine bay.
