The guys on the rally sites consider the 924 a good car to rally because of its good weight distribution and drivetrain. The only reservation they had, was because it was a Porsche. They consider the 924 an exotic! Realize that these guys race old Datsuns, Subarus, Volvos and even crappy American cars like Dodge Omnis and Colts!Their concern for economy and easily found spare parts is understandable because rallying is hard on your car. If you plan to off road rally, protect the underside of the car with skid plates, invest in good fog lights, and increase its ground clearance.I recommend taller tires and/or lightening the car as much as possible to gain an inch or two in ride height. The stock four banger is reliable when its well maintained and fuel injection is preferable to carbs anyway. Some rally events are on paved roads, some off road. Some are TSD (Time-Speed-Distance)races and others are timed hillclimbs, Solo I or II autocross events. 924Martini and I are teaming up to rally this year and I suggest you find co-enthusiasts to make rallying fun and affordable for you. The 924 has the same racing pedigree as all the other Porsches so its time we "represent" and get out cars out there. Keep the comments coming.

I tkink it would be wise to consider finding a $200.oo junker, and make some practice runs, and get a real feel for the extent of abuse the car will receive. the oil pan can be modified,so that it does not come down so far, make it wider, like smush it up.should be able to make a shorter pickup tube with copper tubing ,fill the tubing with sand and you can bend it and it wont crimp. the torque tube is up and out of the way,so only the transaxle needs a skid plate. I think and a scatter shield for the flywheel( so it dont buzzzsaw through the floor board at 7G's. hey do they allow breakaway body panels in rally and auto, peter in australia had this idea about light wieght paper mache hood and fenders, might make up the difference between the added wieght of the skid plate.

There was an article in a UK magazine "911 and Porsche World" a while back about some guy who rallies in his 924.

There were quite an extensive list of mods ranging from uprating the cooling system (standard one is pants for rallies), fitting carbs (easy to work with, for him anyway), hydrolic handbrake/emergency brake(good for handbrake turns) to fitting fully adjustable coilovers at the rear.

I think I still have it so will try and dig it out tonight.

Mark, that would help out alot. Rob and myself are starting out from scratch and hope more people will join us. I beleive this is an excellent way to start in the sports car world of racing with people willing to contrubite goods and services to a common cause and go racing while doing it.
