About how much is a 1983 928 Auto worth a strong V8, 70K act mi, leather, AC, PW, sunroof, full bra, gd cond inside & out?
He is asking $6500 obo but Kelley's is saying like $4500

Blue book, Red book, NADA, etc are all just guides and report recorded sales. A good low mileage 83 should be worth $6,500 IF the timing belt has been changed/retensioned as scheduled and there are no other issues. I would try to find a shop in your area that knows 928's (don't just take their word on it) and pay for a prepurchase inspection. If you want to do your own PPI there are some good checklist published on Greg Nichols 928 site. Known issues are the electrical system being complicated, thrust bearing failure, aluminum ball joints, rust underneath the hatch side windows and loss/bubbling of paint due to incorrect prep of the aluminum front end and doors.

The 928 is a super car. I love the look, feel and sound of that 8 cyl engine. Unfortunately, (this is my experience only) they have terrible maintenance problems and are quite expensive (relative to the 924) to repair. Do a lot of homework before you buy. I know that there are good ones out there, just be sure the one you are looking at is not gonna be in the shop every other week.

I've had both good and bad experiences with my 928's. I bought the black one 6 years ago knowing that it had been neglected for the prior 10 years and it has been one problem after another. It has cost about $2,000 in the 3K miles I've put on it. The silber 78 was purchased 4 years ago and I've put 50K miles on it with just $95 in repairs other than tires, oil change, etc. It is due to go down for a timing belt/water pump replacement soon but that will only take one weekend and about $400. That is still an extremely low cost per mile IMO. These extremes point out why getting a prepurchase inspection by someone knowledgeable on the 928 is so important.

the 928 actually doesnt classify as a supercar as it isnt in the garage enough however the parts are more expensive for it, there are basic matenance items which need to be fixed as is everyother vehicle, now the 928 has alot more parts and things to go wrong with it so yes people do think it is a killer in matenance, right now I have spent $8k on my 928 initial purchase price, then suck another $1800 into it right away having the front end service done (timing belt H20 pump, rollers front oil seal, etc.), I also could have done this Job for about $700 myself and given the choice I would do it myself now, but I bought the car knowing that I needed it done and just wanted to drive the car so I had a shop do it, I am not going to say anything about tires they are normal wear items that I dont consider soething that should be considered, right now I also have the power steering rack out of the car as I am rebuilding it (didnt want to spend $395 for a rebuild, and I will have fun learning with it) I am also going to be taking the intake off and stripping and having it powder coated very soon here, well as soon as the weather dips above -10 below at my parents.

I will however say that in order to own a 928 you should be an advanced backyard mech who can trace electrical problems down and also can figure out how to pull something out of the car and replace it w/o having too much trouble

and the 928 w/ really low miles as an example less than 2000miles a year those are the ones with problems because nothing is being used and these cars LOVE to be driven

once more though I would NOT recommend the 928 for someone who cant do there own mech and electrical work
