| The oil temperature warning light flashes on before the car is up to operating temperature. It only comes on when I press the accelerator to rev the engine. I think the temp warning light is the pinwheel symbol underneath the oil pressure symbol (can with drip). The car idles smooth when cold but misses badly as it warms up. The temp warning light flashes on only when I rev the engine. The higher I rev, the more the light stays on. I lay off the throttle and the light goes out. Any thoughts? |

I think your engine is a bit worn out..(pressure switch most likely is what your talking about?) needs a rebuild or to be easy on it and add oil when needed..it should need it very ocassionally.
I could (probablly am) be wrong...its just a guess!

Rob,
what sort of car are you talking about?
The indicator light below the oil pressure light on 924s is the turn signal indicator (don't know about the 924S, they never tried to sell them down here). There is no oil temp light on any 924 I've seen.
A pin-wheel icon is usually associated with the cabin heater or fan. I've never driven a car where the manufacturer thought you should be warned that you just turned the fan on so we're obviously talking about something else. |

On 1978 and before US cars the turn signal indicator was a seperate light in the speedo.
However, the 1978 owners manual does not say what the "pinwheel" indicates. And, yes it is located where the 1979 cars have their turn signal indicator light.
This light is not on 1979 US cars (so it is not shown in the 1979 owners manual).
Actually, it looks like a spoked wheel with wheel chocks on either side of it. Could it be the parking brake indicator? The 1978 US cars have an EGR light where the parking brake light is on the 1979 cars.
I could not find any reference to an oil temperature light in the 1978 or 1979 wiring diagrams.

| ahhhh, so it's probably just a stuffed switch on the park brake handle which is making contact when there's lots of vibration. |

On the 1979 cars that light changed position to the other side of the gauge. And, it changed appearance to 2 concentric circles bracketed by "parentheses" .
Sort of like (O) but not quite.

Thanks for your responses. My car is a 1977 NA model. I will check the parking brake connections to see if that cures the problem. In my manual the icon is identified as an oil temp warning light. Oh well! Thanks for the photo of the gauge.
