Nope, this is not normal. Everything should be solid and not moving/knocking at all. Only turning with the driving wheel. Try to locate where these knocking come from. In 911 there is a problem at the shaft near the driving wheel hub, there is a thin collar inserted into the bearing or so to stabilise this in an easy way. Just like in a VW bug.... See where the play is and try to work on it.

This is the fix for 911/VW Bug:

Thanks for that. It does feel like the sort of thing that could be responsible for the vibration in the steering wheel. I will try to narrow it down.

Thanks

OK, so after further investigation, the movement is definitely coming from the end of the steering "drive shaft" (that's what they call it in PET) that is closer to the firewall. It seems rock solid at the rack. I can't grab the steering wheel and move it around though, so I don't think it's coming from the cabin end of the steering column. I'm guessing it's where the column mates to the firewall side universal joint. But PET doesn't have a picture of how that fits together. I would guess either that u-joint the bearing at the other end of the steering column from the driver. I can't see that from where I'm looking, maybe it's more visible from underneath.
