|
|
Hello Everyone!
I Picked up a 1980 924t recently, it was not running when i got it but my friend and i fixed it up so now the engine turns over and runs. That being said there are some issues.
1 we seem to be burning oil
2 the oil pressure at idle is 7 bar after cold start, at 4k rpm it hit 10 bar. there doesn't seem to be too much oil it goes maybe 1/4” past the max line on the dip stick.
I’m really hoping someone here has dealt with this before because google and youtube haven’t helped much. We think it could be the OPRV but im not sure if that would explain why we’re burning oil. I’m curious to see if theres a gasket stuck from a previous oil filter, I dont think that would solve anything though.
this is the first car i’ve worked on, im figuring it out lol |

Congrats, these are nice cars and hard to break honestly
It may take some time to sort out things, but guys and girls here are helpful
Can you check the oil pressure with other/external gauge?
What is the shape of the oil itself? Hope it’s not jelly
Good luck, and please share a photo (link from an external site / pics hosting Service). _________________ ---

Well jelly is jelly, it’s not fluid/liquid. Very old oil in bad shape can be pitch Black and super thick. This could rise the pressure, but if yours seems ok, then try external gauge first.
Oh and I’m not a native, so be forgiving for some of my explainations _________________ ---

The oil pressure regulator might be stuck, IF, the gauge is correct.
The pressure regulator is a piston with a spring behind and is located at the oil pump behind the crank pulley. It can be accessed without issue so it can be removed and checked. _________________ /Magnus, Stockholm Sweden

7 bar cold idle is not unreasonable. 10bar at 4000rpm if still cold also not entirely out of range.
DON'T rev a Turbo till it's warmed up!!!
You didn't specify if the 10 bar is cold or not.
I avoid clearing 3000rpm with my Turbo until my idle oil pressure is below 3bar. Cold idle after start (down to 30F with 20W50 dino oil) is often pushing 8 bar.
Remember that the oil warms a lot slower in these cars (or any) than the coolant; the water temp gauge is not an adequate measure of "warmed up."
It wouldn't be a bad idea to open up and check out the oil pressure relief valve... though I'm thinking you probably have to pull the front pulley to get it out, I think it interferes...
As far as smoking - it's not clear if you've gotten it warmed up yet? For that matter, I do hope you've changed the oil? Not to mention timing belt and all the rest?
I wouldn't be shocked if it smoked a bit after sitting for a while; I wouldn't be looking much at that until it's properly cleaned out, oil and belts etc changed, verify proper cooling function, and then get a full heat cycle on it.
Then you have to look at rings or turbo for the most likely sources of burning oil; leakdown test would clarify if the first is a source, or then Turbo. Unless valve stem seals.
Then you get to think about a rebuild. _________________ Vaughan Scott

Hi all,
Lurker turned poster. I have a pegged oil gauge and confirmed the sweep outside of the car with resistors. The PET does not show where the sending unit is. I cannot seem to find it visually. Is it near the oil filter housing? |

It's at the back of the head, below the distributor... _________________ Vaughan Scott
