After having traced my hot start problem to the hot start solenoid, I started to wonder if anyone had ever torn one down and repaired since they are no longer available.
I had an extra one that had been in the car before the used one I bought that is also bad. I tore it apart and was surprised to find the inner construction. I did damage the solenoid wires in the tear down but think I could now do without the damage.
I found the mount to be crimped steel can. The crimp is used to hold the plastic insulated top in. Down inside there is a bullet shaped plunger that sits down on a small spring within the central tube. This plunger moves when the solenoid is energized. Polarity of the connection does not matter as it moves the same direction when connected either way.
On my part the non-functioning was caused by a varnish builtup in the central core and around the spring. Cleaning with lacquer thinner cleaned and freed the part up.
I am wondering if anyone else has done this teardown and repair. |
