I've been reading and learning from your posts since April when I first got my 924 and you guys have always been helpful. I bought a 1981 Porsche 924 NA that had been sitting since 1998. I have fixed the fuel system and everything under the hood. The last big thing I know of is a problem with the clutch.

When the clutch is pressed it doesn't return for 10-15 minutes. you can assist it with your foot and it will come back. I know this is a mechanical clutch do you think it is a bad cable? what should I be looking for?

Thank you in advance!

to properly fix it you have to remove the bellhousing but you may find a decent fix by first lubing everything. i use triflow for the cable and the pivot at the pedals and for the throwout bearing guide tube (without removing the bellhousing) ive had very good luck using a lanolin based aerosal lube called fluid film.

using the straw you can get some up on the guide tube as a helper presses the pedal in and out to help dispersal. try not to get it on the clutch and pressure plate but dont worry if just a bit, ive seen clutches soaked with oil still work fine.

When I bought my car it had a stiff clutch pedal. The last 1/3 it would get real stiff,. It even had broken a spot weld on the pedal assy. bracket. I got a goood deal on the car and just figured it couldn't be that hard to fix.

I picked up a new Sachs clutch, pressure plate and throwout bearing. Then the next day after work I just dug in. I remember pulling off the clutch cable and thinking "that looks good"., I grabbed one end of the cable and holding the housing in my other hand I slid the cable in the housing. Full movement and no resistance. Well, nothing wrong with that, I thought to myself.

I dropped the exhaust, tranny, torque tube and then the bell housing and was finally able to look at this troublesome clutch. Uh oh, the clutch, pressure plate, flywheel and throw out bearing looked fine, no better then fine, it all looked brand new! I didn't like that! I thought for sure I would find a obvious problem and the new parts I bought would fix the problem but instead I had the feeling the previous owner had already been down this road. I didn't know what to do other than put all my new parts on and hope that somehow fixes the problem.

Well I get the car all back together and guess what, no change what so ever. So I took the car over to my brothers house and he welded that pedal bracket but it didn't really make it any better.

So I went back to try and cover all the bases. I took the clutch cable and squirted some motorcycle chain lube on the cable until it dripped out the other end of the housing and reinstalled it. I stepped on the clutch pedal and boom, it went right to the floor. On the way back up it had an ever so slight hang up but it was at least drivable until I could get a new cable.

So even though the cable seemed to function just fine while it was in my hand, it would barly work when it had a load on it. If the previous owner had just replaced the clutch cable he probably never would have sold me the car.
