The new bearings are being manufactured in China. This after King (in Israel) refused to make more. So I sent in two sets of King bearings for samples. Drawings came back, we compared drawings to our own measurements to confirm dimensions. Everything checked out so we gave the go ahead.

Dan, can you send me the drawings as PDF via email for a quick check?
I see some check jig description on the right and i'd like to see how they thought this trough.
I do this kind of stuff for living and i can provide some feedback to their design and intent of dimensional control and even quality check.

Its not like i want to build a tool and make the parts by myself
They are not some complicated drawings anyway...any competent design engineer could measure and make them from scratch in a day or so.

Purpose is to use my experience as a design engineer in the automotive industry to check weather they did a good job on the design and if they planned anything to check if the parts are good or not.
For that its needed to inspect and review their documentation. Its clear that such documentation should not be public..thats why i asked for it via a private way.

I dont want to be nosy or rude and i am happy that a there is a supplier for these parts. But if the documentation is top secret i'll wait for the first batches of parts to be used and proven in the cars before ordering. After all, its 0.XXmm tolerances we are talking about here and good tolerance control, tooling wear and quality checks are to be in check for such parts to be succesfull.

Look, morghen, no offense intended. But the selection process for the manufacturer is not up for public debate, nor is their manufacturing process. If you don't want to purchase, then don't purchase.

No one even bothered to ask for dimensions (let alone manufacturing process) when we sourced replacements through King, so why should it matter this time around?

Bottom line, I'm not at liberty to share the drawings. Period.

No offence taken. I was just trying to help. I did not know you were looking and auditing suppliers, i would have offered to help earlyer. I did not know you went trough these steps.
However knowing you a bit i trust you did a good job and we will get quality products.

I live in the Detroit area, I have many many many friends and relatives who make a living as automotive engineers. The sourcing decision wasn't made in a vacuum

Sad it went to China, but I understand the cost reasons and that they are in fairly low demand.

I will take a set of standard. I will try and have funding to you prior to 15 Feb.

Cheers,

Ian

Awesome news Dan and well done sorting it out. This keeps the 2.0L platform alive.
I dont have to worry as much now when turning the boost up
I have spare King sets on the shelf but will no doubt be ordering a set of 0.25mm before Feb.
Any plans for going the same route with rod bearings?

Valid point.

Because the King bearings were catalog pieces from a mainstream manufacturer that somebody found online?

Regarding choice of material and therefore quality, what are they made of?

Aluminum alloy
Aluminum alloy with galvanic bearing surface containing copper
Massive bronze alloy
Steel back with plated aluminum alloy
Steel back with plated aluminum alloy with galvanic bearing surface containing copper
Steel back with sintered lead bronze alloy
Steel back with sintered leadbronze alloy and galvanic bearing surface containing copper
Steel back with plated copperzink alloy
Steel back with cast on white metal alloy

The question is of importance due to different characteristics depending of combinations of materials. Some bearings are designed for low-friction, some can handle large forces, some longlife and some revs.

The best alternative would be a three-layer sputter bearing with a nickel barrier made for diesel applications since many of us use turbo. For example, AlSn30 is six times harder than PbSnCu galvanized bearings. Al20Sn and Al40Sn are also used. Use a sputter in the conrod position and a common two- or three-metal bearing in cap to alloy embedding small particles into the soft bearing surface. That would be cheaper as well.
