Hello, im currently involved in a 924 GT conversion and was wandering about a few things...

If i keep with the 4x108 alloys with et15 on the rear and et20 on the front and then get spacers if I need them would this affect the handling alot??

The other thing I was thinking of doing was to change the hubs to 944 hubs so that they are 5x130. Would this move the hubs out so I would only need small spacers if any at all?? would this be a better idea for handling etc...

Cheers for the help everyone.

Remember you are not trying to do anything different to what Porsche have already done in building the Carrera GT!

If you follow their format you will not go wrong. The 924 was upgraded to 924 turbo and then on to the CGT. The 944 was developed after the CGT and can be issues trying to use 944 parts on an early 924. Long story.

If you go to 5 bolt hubs buy all the suspension and brake system from a 924 turbo.

I have bought a 924 turbo parts car but unsure what parts I will be selling in the short term. Andy has a turbo he is breaking currently and is based in Tamworth http://porsche924.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=10952

As for handling, lowering and widening the set up will only improve things

hey tim. I also start a 924 gt carrera conversion as of tomorrow when i get the car delivered. I found myself asking the same questions wandering how to fill the arches. I'd presumed I would just whack some cheap cookie cutters and spacers on there until i found out they are 5 stud.

the cheapest solution is to go looking on ebay for some appropriate used 4 stud alloys. theres massive choice of 108 4 stud alloys, one or two look like they might suit the porsche.

from some rough maths i recon 7 inch wide wheels with an offset of 0 will still only make the wheels stick out about 30mm so would need spacers as well. I'm going to fit the rear arches before i decide what size spacers to fit so i can see what i'm doing.

Another way i found from some googling is to drill and tap a 5 stud pattern into the existing hubs. I don't know how safe that is however, maybe someone cleverer than us will tell us? maybe a specialist machine shop would do that. then its just a case of buying spacers. Spacers would still be needed anyway.

I'll be removing my front wings tomorrow as my first job and maybe start a thread to post some pics as i go along.

..oh as for handling: i think go for the lowest offset value as possible that way the spacers don't need to be as wide. and you dont need longer studs. i'm no expert though. i'm good at taking things apart.

Hello sparkle, yer i was looking at cookie cutters aswel, you can get 4 to 5 stud conversions but not sure if you could get them built into the actual spacers (obvisouly would cost alot more)

Ive been looking through ebay and the net and the only thing i can find in 4x108 is an offset of 15?? there was some mini wheels but they were only 13" with an offset of 0 which is really annoying, have you had any luck?? did you see the ones i was looking at with that offset? they look really nice, have that classic look and alot of other GTC conversions use that same "bbs look" wheel.

Dont think it be too keen on doing that drilling out 5 stud conversion sounds abit dodgy to be fair...maybe the conversion would be better using the spacers?

Just wandering where did you get your GT kit from? ive had a problem with mine as it doesnt quite line up on the offside front wing but I will have to use some filler to correct this which is annoying....

yer taking things apart is much more easy hahahha, ive spoke to a couple of people and they say widening the track of the vehicle is good and will be fine aslong as you stick to the same spec as the standard one...

cheers for the help mate, give me a shout when you start work!

yeah i've seen the bbs type ones. i've not got my kit yet but dont expect it to line up.. most fibre glass parts are a bag of s**t and need loads of work to reshape them and prep them. i'm not too fussed though, i'm going for the scruffy stripped out racer look i think.

I suspect a turbo badge panel will cost more than the value of my car lol.. for those in the know.. is the badge panel something i need to change whilst the wings and front bumper are off or can i do this at any time?

I haven't done it myself but a few of the resident experts have. I'm thinking of doing it on my car for an intercooler.

Directions from Rasta Monsta:

3/8 spot weld cutter and bit to drill pilot holes in each weld.

Remove bumper, open light buckets, remove headligt squeegees, remove 10mm bolts at the outside corners of the headlight openings.

Wipe down the seams, upper and lower. This will help you see the welds. Using cutting fluid, drill a pilot hole in the center of each weld then remove the weld with spot weld cutter. The last one I did took 30 minutes or so.

It shouldn't be bad. All you are doing is drilling out the spot welds.
It seems you would do more drilling the other way.

How is that easier than drilling 30 or so spot welds!! Trying to cut out four nose vents insitu will have your badge panel looking like a car crash has occurred.

There are lots of unfinished CGT's out there because people thought it would be easy and/or cheap to do. It can be done on a budget, however the advice you'll get from forums will be limited. If you want to do it properly there will be no end to the support and guidance even if its all DIY.

There's more satisfaction if the job is done right, because the car will finally look right.

Just so you know, I first wanted to CGT my car. After lots of searching and advice I learned its was best not to. However I still want one!! I will have one!!

erm your right, it was a rubbish idea on reflection.

i presumed if i drill through the spot weld then i'd have to spot weld a new one on afterwards and i don't like welding- nor have any gear for that.

You'll need to clean up the remaining metal work on your car, ideally spot welds in the holes and grind flat. The 924 turbo badge panel would be removed in the same way from the donor car and again the metal will need to be prepped. However the new badge panel can be adapted to become a bolt on affair. Porsche did offer a bolt on version of the turbo badge panel but you are more likely to purchase rocking horse poo from your local dealer than find one of those. UK badge panels sell for circa £100 and upwards and rarely become available. However you might want to try Andy who has a turbo he is breaking at the minute. He could help with the welding as well http://www.porsche924.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=10952 he's in Tamworth.

To fit the rear CGT arches you'll also need to do some cutting and welding of the cars arches as well to allow wider wheels. Read the other CGT thread here for the link to the 'how to'.

You also need to get tricky with the search button here and on Google as there are loads of threads and photos on all this in the t'interweb world

ah great. that's really help full. much appreciated. I can manage fitting the badge panel if i'm bolting it back on.. or maybe pop rivits. i like pop rivits there easy. I guess the drilled holes will be too big for rivits though i'll have to make new ones. as for ht e rear arches i've found the thread already and plan on getting some help with that. thanks again. sorry to steel your threat tim
