Let me start by saying this has been a long time coming for me. I had my first 931 in 1995. I was actually looking for some stock sheet metal to put my old car back together and found a 67,000 mile car from another board member for an ok price.
So this new car had been sitting for quite some time and would hardly start. After re-installing all the hoses and rubber elbows that had been removed, with some help from a friend we got the car running fairly well. I started looking for answers as to why the car still was not 100%. I found possible vacuums leaks as well as a removed O2 sensor. So once I started to price out everything I found the $200 for elbows and clamps could be spent for an EFI conversion.
Now I decided to build a what if car.... What if in 1987 someone decided to build this car what could be used.
-I am starting with a 1982 931 67,000 miles
-I have installed 1986 951
.. Suspension
.. Brakes w/ Stainless lines
.. Transaxel w/ Mobil 1
.. Swaybars
.. Bilstine Shocks and struts
- I cut 1.5 coils from the factory 951 spring and jumped an inner tooth on the torsion bar.
- Also installed a set of 928 S4 wheels.
So this leads me to the engine not running correctly. I decided to use the EFI from a Merkur XR4ti.
.. Including harness, injectors, sensors, and throttle body, and distributor.
(I figured out how to use the 2.3 distributor with the 931 gear)
Im using the ECU and VAM from a 1988 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe.
Intercooler from a 951
Fuel rail from a 1988 Mustang 2.3 return style w/ XR fuel pressure
regulator.
The reason Im using the parts from this old Ford is because the performance #'s between the two cars are very similar. US 931 156hp, UK 177hp all with less then 1 bar. The Merkur XR4ti was 177hp 210tq at 15psi. The Turbo coupe was 190hp 240tq, with the addition of a top mount intercooler bigger VAM and a better ECU.
So since its close I figured I would give it a shot. Then the only tuning would be base timing, fuel pressure, and boost.
With very little mods the XR wakes up quite well. With a ported intake a 3'' exhaust and a front mount intercooler, oh and a ECU and VAM from the Tbird. A friends car put down 227hp and 310tq at 15lbs of boost (at the wheels). So if my 931 does anything like that and it gets good gas milage I will be more then happy. _________________ So many cars so little time. |

Just a few pics of the car as it sits as well as one of the 2.3 ford distributor next to the 931 unit. _________________ So many cars so little time. |

Sounds similar to my system for a non turbo set up I took from a 92 GTI. Check my write up on Easy EFI. I will be watching this thread close.
I also pulled a ECU and harness from an old SAAB for a 931. _________________ 77 924

Just ordered the last of the major parts. Its going to be a while before everything shows up with the Holidays.
If I get some time I will make the throttle body elbow and mount the ford 3g alternator. _________________ So many cars so little time. |

Xmas has been slowing shipping. So not much has happened.
I got the wiring harness out and labeled everything. Made sure I have everything to make this happen. Just waiting on a few major parts to show up in the mail. _________________ So many cars so little time. |
