My steering rack is geting old and worn, I don't know if a rebuild will help alot so I'm thinking in replacing. I've found a 924S in a junk yard and it still has it's steering rack on, will it fit on my '76 924? and is the ratio shorter?
Thanks!

That should be a power steering rack in the 924S. That would take a fair bit of engineering to retrofit.
When you say the rack is worn - why? What makes you feel that it's worn out? What makes you so sure it's not other parts? _________________ Vaughan Scott

well, in roads with bad surface it knocks alot and it has a little play in center. Although the steering rack itself has some play (but it is very little, maybe it's normal...), I supose most of the play is due to the linkage between he steering rack and the steering column. I was thinking when I got around to fix that play maybe I would also substitute the steering rack with the one from a 924S because I think it has a shorter ratio.... but I'm not sure about that last one... anyone knows?

You've probably got bad upper strut mounts. _________________ Vaughan Scott

I am interested in swapping a 924 steering rack into my Rabbit GTI. Is this the rack that is a direct replacement and has a 25% quicker ratio than my stock VW unit? How much do you want for it? _________________ Robert M. Mazurowski

The 931 steering rack has a tighter ratio than the 924 rack. I have one waiting to go into my car when I rebuild the steering. _________________ '81 931 in various states of assembly |

Uhh....I don't know about that CBass. I have an '82 931 and used to have a '78 924. The steering in the NA definitely felt quicker. According the "Little Spec Book", both the NA and 931 had a 19.15:1 ratio and non-USA cars had 22.39:1 (which would be slower). Somewhere, I have read that the 931 had the slowest ratio, then the 924, and then the Rabbit. I am actually considering swapping a Rabbit rack into my 931 if I can verify the quicker ratio. I am really not satisfied with the ratio of my 931 and was pretty happy with the steering of my '78 924.
Can anybody verify the numbers?
Thanks, Troy |

Hmm, that's interesting. I don't remember where I read that, but I saw it somewhere... I thought it was in the tech section, but now I can't seem to find it. Has anyone else read this? _________________ '81 931 in various states of assembly |

According to PET, and to the '81 model supplement, all the 924 and turbo models in North America have a 19.15:1 steering ratio, as do all left hand drive Euro/ROW 924 n/a models. PET seems to indicate that there is a different rack for the Euro/ROW turbo in right hand drive only, which might be the 22.39:1 version. This seems to indicate that all left hand drive 924 models got the same rack worldwide. _________________ Jon Furst |

You may find it is the link rod and not the rack itself.
If it knocks when on full lock at slow speeds its most likely the joints in the rod as they 'find their slack' at that time and its more noticeable.
Common on uk cars.

i can confirm that part of the M471 "S" option on the '80 931 was the 22.39:1 rack. i don't know what other years/models it was also included with.

| Yep it was used to reduce the steering effort to turn those HUGE (in 1980) 205/55x16 tires. |
