Hello all. About two weeks ago I notice my steering wheel was developing some movement. The wheel seems to have about 3-5 mm of movement up and down, side to side ect. i thought the steering wheel nut was working loose so I removed the wheel and re tourqued it down. The nut was fine. I cant seem to figure out where this play is originating from, The steering u joints seem tight no play- is there something im missing? Is there a sleeve or bearing in the column i need to get to? Thanks!

Yes, there is a bearing in the firewall that the column pass through. Royal PITA to change with the car all together.

I would double check both u-joints on the secondary shaft that attaches the column to the rack, however. In my experience, that is almost always where the slop develops. The best thing to do would be to remove it so you can check it thoroughly...

Hmm strange answer Dan, my experience is different.

Yes the needle roller bearing in the firewall can develop slop but it won't manifest in up/down movement in the wheel itself. It's not too hard to change out either once you have removed the steering shaft fore and aft of the firewall.

There is a sleeve bearing ("support ring" position 12A in illustration 403-5 in PET) just in front of ignition switch that when worn or missing (like in my car) will give the wheel a good 5mm of play up and down. So much so that it will rattle up and down when going over bumps.

My previous owner jammed a plastic fitting in there to stop the rattles and I removed it without thinking, creating the problem.

There is an article on replacing an ignition switch at clarks garage. This bearing in the steering column causes most of the problems you describe.

do a search here.
http://www.clarks-garage.com/

The bearing can be bought as a separate part. Bit of work to replace but fixed all my problems.

The plastic sleeve the bearing sits on, comes with the bearing.

This is not available as a 924 part.
However if you download a 914 PET catalogue it is listed.
Cost was about $25 a few years ago.
