I want to get my 924 repainted, but I dont have a whole lota money at the moment. So I was wondering how much some of you guys have spent to get your cars repainted, and lookin great? Also, would it be better if I sprayed the car myself, or leave it up to professionals?

I spent $2,500 on mine and I stripped the old paint and removed all the rubber and trim myself. Don't try to do it yourself if you like the car. It won't turn out good and you'll wish you had a pro do it. Take all the trim, glass, lights etc. off yourself, bring it to a bodyshop(NOT MAACO) and have them do it.

| I spent about 1000 to do mine, that includes buying an air compressor, hoses, attachments, paint gun, sanders and paint. I just used a single stage acrylic enamel no clear coat. Clear is another 260 at napa. Looks pretty good though for my first paint job. I think my bigest problem was work space. I have a tiny garage with poor ventilation. |

hey Diesel Dan,
you paid $2500 after stripping the paint and parts off? seems pretty steep, it looks great though. What did they do special for that much? I've seen some pretty nice paint jobs for that much without doing any prep for the shop.
Mine's due for a repaint. I've got some rust spots popping up and figure I'll just do the whole thing. Did you strip yours down to metal? I'm curious what you did before you sent it off to the paint shop.

I got screwed. I stripped it down to bare metal outside of the body shop, I removed everything that wasn't getting painted except the windshield. There was some spots of rust sprouting near the winshield and sinroof frame, these were sandblasted till the metal was clean and then quickly sealed with epoxy primer. If I had it to do over, I would have picked a different painter but it's all over now.

I paid au$4000 [US$2000] for mine. They did a great job on the body and paint [bare metal respray] but stuffed up the power window wiring, destroyed door rubbers, refitted rear wiper upside down so that it scratched paint 1st time I used it, broke the windscreen during removal and bent the windscreen fixing trim. The toothless panel beater who I met later looked like he learnt his trade in prison.
If you want a quality paint job don't spray it yourself it takes more skill than you can imagine to get that gloss but do any body work you can. |

| I think the high cost and gloss come from wet sanding with 1k, 2k, 4k, and 6k grit sand paper , buffing with a mild polishing compound, and finnishing with a coat of wax. alot of labor but it can be done by an ametuer, careful on the edges so you dont cut through the finnish , and you need to apply several extra coats of paint/clear coat as you will remove a few during sanding. |

You can save a lot if you rent an orbital sander, spray gun and do the prep work yourself. Sand, prime, sand, prime... that sort of thing.
If you do most of the prep work yourself, and then take it in for final prep, colour coats and clear, you'll save a bundle... They'll also polish it properly.

I have been curious about stripping the rustproofed (zinc dipped I believe) body down to bare metal, does any one know if there is a risk of stripping off the factory rust protection?

| I paid $4K CAD for the entire car. The job included removal and reinstall of all the rubber. They left overspray though, and fisheyes. |

Personally...I think the zinc protection is most important on the insides of the body panels...not the outside.
I too stripped my car down to bare metal.....but also used an epoxy primer (it has a high concentration of zinc).. so there for it should be well protected.
If you were closer Redcar.....i would give you a good deal on a paint job....depending on the amount of bodywork needed ..... I could do a Base/clear job for around $1300.00 cdn..... you wouldn't touch the car. |

| I stripped the zinc coating off with a DA sander. After I got done chemically stripping the paint off, the bodyman said to use 80 grit and sand it down till the ematal was shiny. Then he did a coat of epoxy primer then a coat of some other primer. Then it was color coated and clear coated. A week later a wet-sand and buff and it was done. |
