|

Hi- I am new to the forum. I have an 87 924S that keeps blowing fuse number 7. This is the fuse that controls the radio, clock and interior light. I have checked the overhead light. I even removed it, and my amp meter shows a direct short on the fuse slot. I did find broken wires under the hood for the hood light, as well as broken wires on the hatch on the passenger side, I assume for a light in the back?. I have for now cut and black taped all those wires, but still get a short indication. Everything was working late Sat night, went to got in the car Sun morning to go to church, my wife and I opened both doors, I stuck in the key and noticed that the radio didn't come on. The clock was stopped at about that time. I beleive that is when it happened. Could this be something broken in the doors causing a short? Any advice to track this down is greatly appreciated. _________________ Jim Fox- 87 924S |

Yes - the doors are notorious for having bare or broken wires right where the wires pass from the switch into the front fender. I have had to repair mine in the past. Remove the screw from the door switch and check the leads for bare or cracked wires.
Also check the door lock and window control wires going from the door into the fender inside the rubber boot.
It's a pain to fix because there is not much slack in the wires, but it is doable.

Thanks, I will check. Are you talking about the switches that push in and out when you open and close the doors, or the big rubber cover that goes from the front fender into the door? Thanks.
P.S. I'm in Warrenton Va. not far from you _________________ Jim Fox- 87 924S |

Checked both doors and didn't see any bad connections or bare wires? Any other suggestions? Thanks _________________ Jim Fox- 87 924S |

There's a courtesy light switch built into the right hatch strut as well. _________________ Toofah King Bad

Well the problem was with the clock. By process of elimination, when we took the center console off an un- hooked the clock, the Fuse #7 didn't short. So we put it all back together with a new fuse and now the interior lights work and the radio works!!!!! Since the aftermarket radio already has a clock in it, I'm thinking of not replacing it, unless someone has one for cheap. Thanks for all the suggestions. I have learned a lot in the last few days about wiring and grounding on a 924S _________________ Jim Fox- 87 924S |

I have a spare clock - you can have it for cheap.
(Drive up here with your car and a 6-pack)

check all your grounds as well. A corroded ground can be non conductive. Refer to a haynes manual, if you dont have one pick one up, they will list all the grounds. Electrical Engineering 101 current build up=voltage. if you are not getting proper grounding you can may be seeing voltage build up that will cause the fuses to blow, this can also harm your other electronics. I would advise getting an inwire fuse holder (radio shack, a few $$), and put it on your stereo power wire to protect it. If you have not come to know it yet, Porsche does a lot of things better than every one else, electrical systems are not included in that category.
Good Luck

Wow! Electricity sure acts strange in your universe.
I'd advise anyone else out there to avoid Electrical Engineering 101, 'cuz that is some of the strangest stuff I've read in a long time. _________________ 78 924 NA
