So, I've been hanging out on the 928 forum on rennlist lately, and have found that they've been making special drivers and the like to fit in the doors of their cars as they have a similar problem in which they cannot fit such deep speakers into the doors, panels, etc. These have mainly been for the 84 and later 928s as they have grills over the speakers. The earlier 928's have the same sort of 4x6 speakers in the doors as our cars do. So, I was wondering would anyone be interested in some new amazing sounding speakers for their cars?
One option that they have thrown up is making a plate that will hold a 4" driver and also a 3/4" Vifa NE Tweeter. A bit more on the expensive side, but if I can get some ideas of how much y'all are willing to spend, I can tell them more specifically what we are looking for.

surprisingly, yes.

According to the guy doing all this work, these speakers are truly amazing and wouldn't require you to have a sub in the car so you can keep that stock look.

Here's what a possible driver would look like in the 4", 3/4" tweeter setup. These are custom made with carbon fiber :

Soo...I talked with Hans again, and he said the price would actually be more around $350 for a pair....Any takers?

They (the drivers) are designed to beat the best 4" drivers out there, such as the Focal 100VRS.

This is just me but, I think these would just be fine:

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_13966_Infinity-Kappa-462.9cfp.html#tabs

Still expensive ($105 each), but not as much as Hans wants. Might be too deep?
Who knows the max permissible depth for the sides? I know that when I installed the 4" three-ways in my n/a, I had to cut out a small piece of metal- unless very thin, these would probably require more cutting.

I had cheap boschmann's iirc. They fitted great and weren't expensive. Sound was great too, but I donīt have high standards...

I bought 4 for 40eur apparently, so that's maybe $60 or so? for 4...
Also had some sony speakers in the rear 'floor'... don't know anything about those, but it was good enough.

4x6 coaxial speakers just don't reproduce sound as well as their circular counterparts, IMHO.

I think I've found a winner:

More responsive than the other one I posted, but also a bit cheaper! They are also fairly shallow, mounting depth is 1-3/4".

I'm not scared, I think it's kind of funny. Dutch sounds like a mixture of English and German, IMO.

Why not use this:

and then put in any speakers you want.

you could do that, but then the car wouldn't look stock/original anymore. I'm talking about keeping everything looking like it did when new, but packing a bit more punch.
Also, it says on the ebay page that those pods are out of stock...

That reminds me of something else I have to ask on here: Where are some good places to put dynamat on the early cars?

I can describe where I found the sound deadening material in my 79 if that helps. The entire floor was done and up about half way on the firewall - essentially where the carpet stopped. It did not go up the left and right right side of the interior, just along the floor. It covered the entire tranny hump back to the cross member that makes the base of the rear bucket seats - not all the way back to the rear bell/transfer hump, just up to where the rear seat begins to mold with the tranny hump.

If you were going to add dynamat to the car, I would probably include the rear bucket seat depressions and the rear bell/transfer hump - up to where the rear hatch area stops. That's what I'd do with the traditional dynamat. Now that they have Dynamat SuperLite, you might go crazy and put it along the entire inner side panels (doors, rear quarter-panels, and under the rear windows). That would surely tighten things up.

Good Luck - and hope that helps.
