OK - stupid question, but just looking for some confirmation.

There's high pitch whining sound coming from the back of the car (no, it's not my wife or one of the kids).... it happens intermittently. I had the car hesitate and bog down a couple of times at my last track event, mostly at low RPMs.

I think it's the fuel pump getting ready to kick the bucket. Do the bearings in the pump usually give up and make a noise before it totally dies?

Thanks,
Brad

It would be a good idea to monitor the pressure at your fuel rail. A fuel pump whining can be caused by many things, one of which is a high load on the pump from fuel line restriction. This can be caused by a block in the line or filter or a failing fuel pressure regulator. Whining fuel pumps can also result from trash in your fuel. The 944 fuel tank has a in tank filter to prevent this, but after 20 plus years they almost always either have holes or the screen is lifting from the frame allowing particles past. The fuel pump has a fan type impeller and jambs very easily. For this reason I always install a small plastic fuel filter in line before the pump when I replace the pump. You can get them at walmart with all the other fram stuff. There are a few sizes, just get the one with the biggest pipe openings. I don't remember the part number.

Try removing your fuel pump and draining all the gas out of it. Then hook it up to 12 volts and hear how it runs. It the bearings are going bad then it should have a very apparent howl or scream when dry.
