Hello all,

Newbie question here. I have an '81 924 I am prepping on a tight budget for Auto X / eventual SCCA ITA/ITB racer. I have many questions, but the one puzzling me right now is how to lower the rear of the car? I don't have much experience with torsion bars.

My current plan is to put Weltmeister sport springs on the front of the car along with Koni sport shocks - hopefully lowering the front around 1.5 inches and firming it up a bit.

For the rear - I am puzzled. I plan on putting Koni sports on the back, but how do I actually lower it without breaking the bank on a full coil-over kit? Or is that the only way?

Thanks in advance!!!!

Cheers,
Ian

First, determine the spring rate you want in the rear:

Second, buy some stiffer torsion bars:

or

http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/944M/POR_944M_SUSprf_pg1.htm#item2

Third, remove the rear suspension and install torsion bars:

If you do your homework right, you'll be able to get them right the first time. Otherwise you'll have to pull the suspension to reindex the bars again. There are ways of making them easier to reindex, but that requires cutting holes in the body work, etc.

Awesome!! I will give that article a read and see which Torsion bars I will go with. I will probably have more questions later.

Cheers,

Ian

A 924 can be lowered practically to the ground without touching the torsion bars, but it requires some mods to the springplates and I feel a little too taboo to describe here. You will also have to reset your other rear alignment values, especially camber.

Doesn't fix the lack of spring rate necessary to not run out of travel when driving quickly, like on a track or on an AutoX course.

New Torsion bars and/or adding coil springs are the only ways to increase the spring rate.

Obviously not. One of the reasons why I never posted anything about it on the board. On this particular car I had adjustable koni shocks set stiff and never had any bottoming or rubbing issues. Infact the car was so rigid it was uncomfortable to ride in on anything but a flat road and i ended up backing the damper setting to about halfway. I am sure stiffening shocks without adding stiffer springs put an undue load on the shocks, but again I never had any problems. It was fun to look at but I eventually raised it back to stock height and sold it.
