On Feb 14th I begin the 924S project previously referenced here.

I am going to be using my soon-to-be 924S for a daily commute, roughly 25-30 miles each way on winding state highway roads. I'd like to get the best mileage that still leaves me with adequate performance. I also don't want a car that sounds like one of these fart cannon equipped import jobs either.

Any thoughts?

I'd say the best thing you could do for gas mileage is just replace the simple stuff like filters, the cap and rotor, plugs, and fresh oil. Other than that, I dont think there is much else you can do aside from making sure everything is in good working order. Just keep the revs low and you should probably get pretty good mileage.

Increase tyre pressure to 45psi, max 50mph, allways use the highest gear possible and buy large rear tyres in order to keep the revs down. And by largae I mean LARGE (not wide!). Check that the bearings are fine, the rotors are straight and the pads are not dragging.

Put a block of wood behind the throttle pedal. That will stop you using too much gas!!

Also alignment - for instance, incorrect toe settings (both front and rear) can cause left and right wheels to be constantly traveling toward or away from each other, so they're scrubbing the pavement diagonally. That loses you mileage, tire tread, and traction.

1.wheel alignment
2.wheels balanced
3.comfort tires
4.increased tire pressure
5.tune-up
6.unclogged exhaust

Cruising at a constant speed of 35mph.

light weight engine oil will decrease fuel usage too.

When cruising if your foot isn't numb from holding the throttle as steady as possible you are not doing it right. Don't accelerate and de-accelerate constantly. This means ignore others around you and anticipate the traffic around you so you are not getting all jerky on the throttle.

Follow BMW's ancient recommendation of accelerating hard to cruise speed and then cruise as described above.

I am very good at pulling major MPG's out cars while not appearing to be a hypermiler (i.e. holding up traffic).

There are more radical things you can do but these are the easiest to start.

I don't have a 924 record yet since none are running at the moment in the fleet but here are my current records.

BMW330Ci 35mpg (US!) over 700 miles mixed but mostly highway, loaded
GMC Acadia 26mpg (US!) over 700 miles mixed but mostly highway
Camry Hybrid 52+mpg (US) over 500 miles more mixed than above ( 60% highway and 30% back roads, FULLY loaded)

All used the technique as described but modified for how I felt the individual vehicle liked it.

924 records to follow especially from the '80NA since that is a major goal

I do 85 Miles a day, at speed. I've got a 3 l engine, which helps some. What I really recommend is the 944Turbo box. Fifth is much more of an overdrive type ratio, and saves I'd guess 3-5Mpg. Also, don't drive at night. having the lights flipped up looses 2-4 Mpg
YMMV
