I've got a '88 924s and the black paint(?) along the rear hatch edge is chipping off. Any ideas on how to refinish this area? Thanks.

| To clarify, I meant the black edge of the inside of the glass. Is it paint that's flaking off? Any harm in scraping it off? Anything I need to be aware of? Thanks again. |

I don't want to panic you or anything, but the black trim paint that you see on the inside of the hatch window is a indicator of the condition of the glue bond between the glass and the hatch frame.
If the paint has separated from the glass, you have an indicator this the glass/frame bond has been overstressed, and/or the persons opening and closing the hatch have been using the wrong method.
I would not touch the paint myself, except possibly with a clean cloth, with maybe a little water to help you pick up any loose debris.
Where is the delamination of the paint from the glass that you noticed? Is it up at the top of the frame, near the hinges. or down at the bottom near the rear of the car?
Purposely mechanically scraping, or checmicals would probably further the deterioration of the glue seal. Regluing the glass to the hatch frame has not been permanently sucessful from what I have seen and read, only a temporary measure. The only permanent repair is the replacement of the glass, and the cost of a new hatch (with comes with the glass and frame factory bonded) is over $3000. Use hatches can be had for as little as $100 from some private individuals, but the condition of the glus bond is always suspect. |
