|
|
I was driving home the other night behind a landscape truck and a tree branch flew out of the truck and hit my mirror and broke the glass. I have the standard type of mirrors and I was wondering if this thing comes apart and I can replace the glass or if I have to buy a whole new one? _________________ Michael

I've got a local glass cutter that I've had replace quite a few of mine. It's around $30. _________________ 1980 924 NA

thanks for the info so far. Ole Billy.. thanks but mine is not electric
So this thing is just glued on? Here is a few pictures of what I'm working with. To me it looks like the unit separates right behind the glass. Looks like there is a seam there that comes apart? I was thinking of removing the rest of the broken glass and then I could separate it from the inside. If I use a screwdriver from the outside, I know I'll mess up the plastic.

if thats what I think it is Rabbit Mk1 #171857501 you can get them anywhere for a tenner…
and they don't go apart at all; It is one piece of plastic with different surface structures as you could
detect by the reflections inside the mirror. (… housing, mirror-housing)
Since mine is replaced already, I opened it up so we can see what's happening inside…
Thats my late Vdubs passenger side mirror that got hit by a Benz &%#$@.
The plastic/paper in the background keeps the shattered to pieces mirrorglass together just like yours is doing.
IMO the little hole in the bottom is only there to breath …to prevent the mirror from filling up with water etc.
To make sure we are talking about the same mirrors, not only by shape, please take a look at the next picture
and see if your mirror base (the foot that's different) would easily fit on to this…
Then you'd have to swap these over and you're done I'd guess.
…Or stick to your idea of placing a new mirror on top of the old piece with glue.
Getting a fresh shiny new mirror glass into the old plastic frame doesn't look like an option…
Or you should have to split it, the mirror housing…
put the new mirrorglass in, and re-glue it… (just thinking out loud)
Anyway, they do the job pretty well btw; I look into two of those (L/R) during winter
HTH! Cheers, Harm. _________________ Porsche 924 NA 1982 LY7A/A3A3 _ Greater driving pleasure never harmed anyone. |

Do you guys have any suggestion to what kind of epoxy to use on the mirror? I'd assume it would have to be weather resistant. Checked out autozone, they really didn't have much. _________________ 1979 924 Sebring Edition, "Claire" |
