|
|
I own a 1987 Porsche 924S and the speedometer/odometer went bad one day and do not work. I own a Haynes manual for the 1982-89 944 but that does not help when it comes to speedometer problems. It says it has a sensor so I bought a sensor but cannot find where the sensor would go if it has one on my car. Now I also have a speedometer cable for it but do not know how or where to replace it. If someone that has experienced this problem before could please help me out that would be greatly appreciated.

To give you an idea of what it is. If you ever seen the odometer cable on a Schwinn excercise bike thats what your lookin at on a early
car pretty much.it can rust and break.
It unscrews from the back of the speed guage the other end runs and come out a squared hole in the center of the left dust cover.
the cable is routed thru the control arm & needs to be pulled out (if that needs done.)
Theres silcone holding the cable end into the dust cover. Get that off and unscrew the other end and you can pull out the inner cable and replace.

This is why you need the Porsche Factory Service Manual, and the Haynes is worthless. your 87 924S uses a mechanical speedo drive, which has already been pointed out runs off a cable from the left front wheel.
There isn't any speedo sensor on your car. Later 924S and some earlier 944, 951, and 944S use an electronic speedo drive attached to the transmission (depending on the model year are switched to the electronic speedo drive, the 924S was the last).
The silcone on the left front wheel grease cap is not there to hold the speedo cable in place (there's a c-clip for that), it there to seal the wheel bearings against contamination. |

Problem solved and fixed. The cable actually runs from the instrument cluster to the left front wheel and goes directly through the center of the hub. Very simple, easy to fix, works like a charm. I took some photos so I'll be posting a how-to on this in the near future. Thanks for everyone that tried to help.

I just, and I mean I just purchased my new to me 1987 924S, and I have the speedo that bounces about 10 MPH, I am understanding correctly that the fix is replacing the speedometer cable?
Thanks all and I look forward to pulling a lot of information from this forum! |

I have the same bounce and changing the cable did not fix it. Please report back if it fixed your bouncing needle issue. _________________ MOD

Make sure the cable isn't put unto a bind anywhere, if it is, you will have bounce. The bind puts tension on the cable as it spins. When the tension is released, the cable springs a bit & the needle will bounce. All the bends should be as straight as you can get them. The elbow in the cable where it attaches to the speedo is a common trouble spot. |

Thanks for the info, I think instead of trying to lube the cable, I am just going to replace it.
I have also seen on this forum a topic where it talks about a broken gear on the back of the speedometer itself. Is this a common issue or is it usually the cable? |

Why replace the cable unless you need to? Anyway, if you do, make sure you don't put the new one in a bind or you'll have the same problem.
The gear they refer to is for the odometer, not the speedo. |

Ok, I'll check for a bind behind the speedometer first and try and lube it and see if that solves the issue. I had it on a lift today and didn't see any binding leading to the front wheel _________________ 1987 924s |
