I decided to check the oil level on my '77 924 today, because it has been over a month since I last checked it. Turns out it was almost 3 quarts low! In the Haynes manual it says it consumes "1.5 liters/1000 km (1.5 US qts/600 miles)", which seems about right because I drive more than 300 miles per week.

The oil light never came on, so I don't think I did any damage by driving around with so little oil. Anyone ever had problems with these cars and their insanely high rate of oil consumption?

Also, since I have to add 3 quarts every month, does that mean I never have to actually change the oil? Maybe I'll just replace the filter every 10,000 miles or so.

That does make sense, doesn't it?...but if you don't drain oil regularly, you might have to remove the pan about every 10 years and scrape out the sludge.

I must have lucked out. I get no detectable oil consumption - never had another car that burned so little oil.

The valve guides are probably worn, and the stem seals may also be worn. This is typical for the 70s 924s, because the guides were made of a material that often wore out by 60K-70K miles.

During periods of high vacuum, if your stem seals are worn, oil will be drawn into the combustion chamber. You may not necessarily see a big blue cloud of oil smoke behind your car. But your lost oil is probably going out that way.

I was using about 1.5 litres/1000km on dino oil before changing to Mobil S on the advice of the local Porsche distributor. So far I've only added 500ml in 2500km!

When burning oil, this is your signal that you should change the oil more often. The thin "good" oil seaps through the rings The heavy grungy crud stays in your engine. THere is more carbon build up in the cylinders, and some of this carbon may disolve in a rich running car and run into your pan. Aside from that, the oil breaks down more when it's being burnt, and gas parties in it like a teenager, because of blow-by (in other words, suction). This is ultimately is an exponential effect; a warn engine gets worse and worse faster and faster.
