Hi all! I am going to race an 84 924S in NE 24 hrs of lemons '10. Unfortunately I have never owned, worked on, or raced a 924S.
It is a N/A 84 924S w/ 86 motor in it. I'm looking for any type of recommended modifications. Is there any 'must do' type mods for this car? Parts from 944? Or possibly other cars that make a world of difference or even down to a noticeable difference.
I have a full CNC machine shop, welding, sheetmetal, sandblasting and painting facilities at work to make or modify parts. Solid bushings? etc.
We can only spend money on safety equipment - including tires and brakes, since our budget was used on purchasing the car.
Are there any parts that are worth much if they are in good shape? We have all the glass from it and the interior. Anything we can sell helps us big time we will even trade for parts. The car is about 30 min north of Boston.
Our basic plan is to cut/remove anything not necessary, basic 8 point cage w/ 2 or 3 door bars, and a race seat. Any recommendations on the seat? We also want to retain the the idiot lights.
What is the biggest tire for stock wheels? Maybe 225/50/15 direzza star spec. {minim of a 190 tread ware} Will that size rub?
Is an Audi 5000 throttle body worth while upgrade?
Any suspension specs? Should it be lowered?
Any advice will be helpful for sure!

Get a nice set of racing pads _________________ Over the top of skyline, total brake failure.... hit the wall at over 200 kp/h at the dipper, so anyone who has to brake for the esses is a pussy.

924S is the 944 engine, not the 924 engine. So 2.5L, not 2.0L
Don't worry about power, just make sure the engine and drivetrain are reliable. Remember this is a long race, consistency is more important than outright speed.
Bench racing is great, but I would focus on making the car reliable first by fixing and replacing any questionable mechanical items, using loctite locknuts, safety wire and good quality hoses and belts wherever possible.
Rasta was part of a team that ran a 944 in the ChumpCar race here in Portland. While they weren't the fastest on track, they could out-brake nearly everyone on the track and aside from a fuel pump and some shift linkage issues, they were damned reliable. They also had a lot of fun!
I would look at cheap ways to stiffen the suspension (hint: check out the Super Beetle thread) and stuff the widest tires/wheels you can under the car along with the best brakes you can buy (luckily brakes are safety items and are usually outside of the budget)
Since you have some tools to play with, some ideas: Polyurethane bushings (freeze first before machining), adjustable sway bars, solid sway bar links, camber plates, brake cooling ducts, and bump-steer improvement.
Lighten the car as much as possible, remove/replace glass, gut the doors, etc. _________________ Stefan

yes it is a 2.5L
its in good shape. we plan on repacking the bearings and CV's and tchangine to synthetic fluid in the transaxle.
what brake pads and where can i get them?
it has factory 15" 5 x 128mm wheels
anybody have a set of 16" they want to get rid of cheap? steelies are ok
i usually make my bushings out of 6/6 nylon with MDS impregnated stiffer than poly - no squeeks
any suspesnion specs? |

Look for 924 ITB and Spec-944 for suspension settings and brake suppliers.
Pelican, Lindsey, EBS, Paragon, etc are all good suppliers.
The pad type depends on the type of track. Most of the cheap-car races keep the speeds below 120 for liability reasons (and to lessen the carnage) so I'd look for brake pads that will hold up for dual purpose use.
Hawk Blue and Pagid Yellow RS19's seem to be the pad of choice right now. The next rubber ducky is always around the corner though
I don't remember what Rasta used on his car and he's out of town right now. He'll be back later this week and maybe he can fill you in a bit more on what he and his team did.
I do know that some of the more aggressive full race pads tend to chew up rotors and can take a while to get up to temperature and require a good driver to keep them in their heat range. So be aware of that when researching pads. _________________ Stefan

I much prefer KFP Golds to Hawk Blues - super-strong, durable, and don't eat rotors. Paragon has 'em. They rock, period.
If you lower the car, it's much easier to get the camber you need. Figure 5" or lower at the rockers. 3 deg camber all around makes things happy, real happy.
If you're real crafty, you can move the front suspension a-arm mounts up and out, if you can do it safely (read: well), like the D Prod factory cars, and therefore also widen track and gain a bit more camber too.
Stick with 15's - cheaper tires, and lighter.
Kirkey seats are inexpensive and light; I've been in one for years, love it. Others don't like em as much. YMMV.
You'll have to find a way to keep wider tires like 225's off the front springs... may have to play with offsets/spacers. More camber won't help much. Unless you make up front camber plates, so you don't have to add so much camber down at the bottom at the spindle. _________________ Vaughan Scott

I have some 16" wheels for sale (16 x 7 F, 16 x 8 R), but they need small spacers in the front or camber plates so they don't rub on the springs.
Spacers are a no-no at Lemons tech, so don't go that route. Camber plates are not cheap.
Watch out for the $500 spending limit - suspension mods are NOT considered safety, and you'll get penalized for fancy add-on parts.
Make sure the car looks like a $500 car... or else the crusher could be visiting you.

Cool, whatever you build, make it purposely ugly and/or paint it flat black with the cheapest, nastiest paint you can find.

id concentrate on reliability. making sure the parts that need oil, always have enough. repack the greased parts and have spares on hand. at the minimal, id want a spare head (and belts,) axle with cvs, set of a-arms, and calipers,an extra dme and relay would be good to have as well. double secure all wiring harness connectors together so one of them doesnt unplug itself six hours in, those little tabs are probably brittle from age and shouldn't be relied on.
build a GOOD cage, just because itll pass tech, doesnt make it good, and a weak cage will ruin every ones day. _________________ Eric
