Curious. Buying goodies for the engine rebuild. Crower rods - worth it over stock?

Will also be doing some head work, and eventually when i can get my ass up to portland buy stefan's ms system he has.

Depends on your goals. I dont know much about crower rods but theres huge weight saves that can be done with some nice forged ones. Nice if you want high power and high revs.

When you factor in the cost of new rod bolts (~$245) and having to have custom bushes made ($???, NLA from Porsche), it's definitely worth thinking about. They are the least expensive aftermarket alternative available for our cars as well (Pauter and Oliver both run ~$1200 a set). Lighter & stronger too.

I agree with Dan.
I've found out those bushings aren't available anymore and they'll need machining anyways, so that'll cost more too.

If the old ones are good and you're not trying to go extreme though... just use the old ones... depending on their state.

If you can hack it I would go with the lighter Crower units. Less stress on everything with lighter parts. +1 on the bolts too. No longer have to worry about that issue (bolts come with rods)

From a wisdom perspective (many engines built). Its normally a good a idea to build a good strong bottom end. Then when you want more later your short block is ready for you

well, i have been saving my pennies and do want a pretty serious build. i'm obviously not going to build it till it's ready to burst, however, i do want a nice engine.

sounds like they're worth it then. i shall wait a few and then order.

The rods I purchased for the UWB are going into the club sport motor, so I now need to order another set for the UWB. I can hold off on that until you're ready to order yours, as I'm in no huge rush at this point...

Dan, do the rods come with bolts on those or do i still need the ARP bolts? And if they do come with bolts, are they REUSABLE? If they come with the bolts that would save a nice penny.

It looks like they do but I want to make sure.

called crower, they said yes. if you need to order them order them dan, i may actually end up just doing the bolts and stuff and doing a basic rebuild this time around, not entirely sure. i do definitely wanna build the engine but may give it a go with basic stuff this time around.

He said they are NOT reusable bolts. They are stretchables, but he said you can get 4-5 uses out of them easily.

Yes, bolts & nuts come with the rods, and they include "integral" bushes for the little end. If you order independently, make sure you specify that Crower notch the big end to replace the function of the stock rods' integral sprayers, as these do not have the integral style.

As I said, I'm in no huge hurry at this point. When I'm ready to order mine, I'll drop you an email.

For my curiosity, do you know what manufacturing process was used to create these rods? are they machined from billet or forged then machined?

Steel billet, CNC machined, heat-treated, and shot-peened. The also offer Titanium.
