hi, im mike, and im 13 years old. in january, i decided that i wanted to buy a beater to work on with the help of my moms boyfriend, i had been searching for a car for under a grand for three months when i found this- a 1979 porsche 924 for 1000 bucks. when i saw this ad it seriously blew my mind. turns out its being sold by a 14 year old kid who ran out of cash... and luck. i managed to lower the price to a mere 700 over email, and decided to go to ajax to buy it. (i live in toronto) when i left for ajax, i thought i was going to buy a complete toilet! but when i saw that all the car needed was plugs, brakes, a fuel pump, paint, and some minor interior work, i freaked out! i have now owned the porsche for a week, and the only problem i've had is that i got screwed for a bosch external electrical fuel pump. the dude sold me a busted pump. ANYWAYS all of you who have read this post now know a 13 yearold in the mississauga/ toronto area who owns a porsche. i have questions also- where is the control for the electric side mirrors, where is the control for the radio antenna to go down, and would anyone like to tell me where there is a toronto area porsche show?[/u][/i]

if you were that lucky you would have figured out there was a turbo under the hood and a naked chick in the passenger seat.

you are lucky having a porsche at 13...you'll only be able to drive it in 3 years though.

and I'm still looking for that emoticon saying this thread is useless without pics!

Grats on the car - take care of it. It's the gateway drug into the Porsche world. You'll have a hard time just wanting one taste of them.

Either that or you'll end up like Dan and buying a lot of them. I'm turning into a Dan.... I gotta stop buying them.

If you have any questions - JUST ASK! We're here to help as a community.

its only innuendo though mikeprce as obscene or offensive posting gets you an indefinite ban. Ask Joes924Rracer he is on probation (sorry Joe)

Well it looks like our board members are getting younger. (whats that all aboat) Once upon a time the board was all guys. nice to see women and children getting on board. and i thought uffie. was young.

Good for you mikeprce. Its nice to know that our cars a popular amongst youngsters as well as the old farts here. And they sure are a good education too (as is this board).

these guys were so bowled over by your age they forgot to answer your question.

Well, its a little joystick mounted just under the two electric window switches. its in the reassess of the door card. You cannot see it from the driving position but you can feel it. there is also a switch in the center console aft of the gear stick that switches the joystick between the left and right mirror. the layout of the controls in these cars are not brilliant, you have to feel yourself around.

Anyway. welcome aboard.

Congrats kid, you've made a good choice and your're going to have a great ride and exciting learning curve. All the credit in the world to you for working to get what you want!

FYI,you'll have company from another 13 year old along the way as my daughter will be working with her old man and mom on our recently acquired 924S and hopefully be getting her license and doing DE's and autocrossing in that car.

Keep us posted on your progress.

OK, that's gotta be the record here?!

Mate, you talked him down three-hundred bucks?! You'll do well here

It's a shame you have to wait a while to drive it (or any 924). That's the really cool thing about these cars. They're just good, old-fashioned fun to fling around.

As for working on 'em, well, they're simple enough and most stuff's cheap (relatively speaking). But depending on the condition of it, you might run out of budget before you run out of enthusiasm
The big problem is when major mechanical/electrical stuff has to be replaced, instead of being able to be repaired. That can get spendy real quick...

But I do wish you the best of luck and like everyone else here, I'll help if I can.

I'll second what Khal said and I sincerely respect his opinion and feelings for you, but add that any car that you may get for the price you paid for your Porsche can still be spendy. You can get a 10 year old Kia or whatever for the same money and end up spending a ton to get it to be a reliable piece...the question is what would you rather drive?

Bottom line is that you have enough time to sort this car through to get it to the point you need to get it to before you'll be able to drive it. I hope that you have or will make some connections in your area to help you see this through...if you were in my neck of the woods I'd be happy to give you some hands on assistance.

There's another young poster here, uffie I believe, that is getting into his first Porsche and he is 16, and I have to tell you that I think it's great to see these bright kids channeling their energy into something that will give them so much knowledge and satisfaction! They won't give up and in time will probably teach us old guys a thing or two...at least I hope so!

Go for it kids, keep the spirit and tradition alive .

HEY! Another member from Ontario... cool

If you need any help i'm like 45-60 minutes away and i could help you source some parts if needed. I got into these cars when i was 15 when my dad bought one to drive but ended up turning into a project (go figure ) so i know how u feel lol

And i agree with what is everyone saying about how fun it is to drive these cars... trust me, i waited 6 years before i got my hand on another 924 to drive and it was well worth the wait!

Now, The power antenna is sitting in a box inside the fender. 3 wires are connected: Positive, Negative and the signal wire. Get a multimeter and check for power on the positive and the signal wire when the radio is on. Usually, its a blue wire that is connected to the back of the radio if an aftermarket radio has been retrofitted to the car. Id say check there before going to the antenna itself.

If there is power but the antenna unit but it isnt working, try bridging the signal wire to the positive wire. If it works then there is a break in the signal wire going to the radio, or if its an after market radio someone messed up the wiring.

If its still not working, you can grab a replacement universal unit from Canadian tire that would work. Its not a special Porsche item.

Grab a haynes manual... it has a cryptic wiring diagram but once you get the hang of it, it becomes a tremendous help.

So good luck! This board is an amazing place to learn a lot about these cars
