Looks like a detent from one of the synchronizer hubs. Do you have a picture of the other side?

Ouch, I had the exact peice come out of an Audi box (86' 944) never bothered to investigate as I had already found it during an exploratory oil change before a road test. 2nd gear almost impossible to select.

Ditto on the detent. I think they might be different for each syncro, so you might be able to tell which one fell out. But unfortunately... I think its a remove, disassemble and repair regardless of which one fell out...

Might be cheaper to buy a replacement tranny...

The transmission is out, if I can track down a good parts car, I may put in another transmission. Funny thing is this box shifted really well and made no bad noises. I will snap a pix of the other side tonight.
