in the 78 im leaning towards just putting in an old sherwood amp i have in the parts bin and and running a female audio jack to it. i can just plug in an mp3 player. total weight including the speakers would be less than five pounds. nothing fancy. i just threw out the kenwood that was in it, which i bought around 1988, it was already rebuilt twice and was beyond saving. the humongous pioneer six cd changer add on also went to the trash with it, also too far gone to save. 20+ pounds of rusty tin gone...
in the 82, i had a clarion z series setup i bought in y2k, with a 12 cd cnet changer. i recently put that system in my daily driver. all the bells and whistles and a really nice set up. it will be replaced by a carputer, which i am testing now in the daily driver.
still have some bugs to work out with the voice command system (much has been done already the above was the intial instal and its a bad vid, but all i have right now.)I need the modules to allow engine data to translate to the pc (data logging, live systems info, etc.) for a non obd car. but since the 931 is being built as a distance road endurance car (street legal) i can do allot more with the atom based mini pc than i could with any commercial unit, for allot less money. right now its just piggy backed in the car stereo in the insight, but eventually, it will be a stand alone unit for the 931 with engine data logging, full gps (already integrated) blue tooth, fm radio, tpms, full night vision cctv (already have the components and it works, but not the really good stuff) and quite possibly passive radar all just for fun, but much of it will be quite useful... _________________ Eric

When I picked up the Toofah several years ago I found a Radio in the trunk that supposedly is the original unit, a Blaupunkt ‘Amsterdam12’.
I went out looking for a nice Blaupunkt update and returned with a second hand TravelPilot instead of a Radio.
Promo clip: http://www.blaupunkt.de/fileadmin/user_upload/UK/download/multimedia/e1.mpg
To use the Navigation you plug-in a GPS antenna & you need to hook-up the speed signal to a converter that creates a pulse. Combined with the GPS it gives a very accurate positioning during Traveling. …Finding that pulse converter was the hardest part. Did find it and works excellent now!
A Blaupunkt iPod(1)-USB(2)-Interface (7 607 541 500) fills up the CD changer cable slot.
iPod disadvantages:
— Regular Firmwire update procedure for iPod (interface).
— …over 12.000 songs in shuffle can be veeery disturbing, so I don't use the iPod that much anymore; Over the years I brought the selection down to a ‘Traveling Lib’ so it could be contained on two USB-sticks.
There is still a slot open that can be used for Bluetooth, but I avoid using the phone in the car at any given time.
Regards, Harm. |

ive been piecing it together, mostly from various ebay sellers. I think i paid $90 shipped for the Intel D945GCLF mainboard, which also included a 80gig sata hard drive and a gig of ram, AND a pico power supply. i bought the M350 case (really nice, rail mountable and fully vented, under $50) and a few assorted odds and ends from these guys as well: http://www.mini-box.com/site/index.html .
darn thing is more reliable than my industrial twin zeon workstation (that i use at home) so far...
the most expensive component was the 7" touch screen ($250). you can save big $$ by getting a main board with a tv out port, and use a analog tuner lcd as a monitor (cheap now that their tuners dont work anymore) and get a touch pad mouse instead...
check out centrafuse for the front end software, they integrate well with various data loggers. im using riderunner, which is free, but not nearly as well set up, especially in my hands.. _________________ Eric

For the screen, Look up "liliput" on ebay... most CarPC guys use them (I Do) and the new ones have LED lighting, so less problematic in colder climates and much brighter and reliable as well. I think they are around the $200 mark. The more expensive units are better in terms of sunlight readability but meh, i havent had an issue yet.
I got megaquirt working with the PC, and i can say its awesome to see everything in realtime as im driving without having to fiddle around with a laptop. Touchscreen makes stuff MUCH easier to adjust on the fly. I can also datalog every single drive without having to lug a laptop around.
If you need more info on car pc setups check out www.mp3car.com _________________ 1977 Porsche 924
