Hello, everyone.
Back in 1979, my dad bought a 924 turbo. Red (I think it was called "Indiana Red" now that I think of it), with a tan vinyl interior. Cool car.
I was 16 at the time, and didn't get to drive it much. Over the next few years, I would drive it on rare occasions. One time, he let me take it out...that was probably about 1982 or so.
Sadly, dad died in 1985. Mom held on to the car for a few years, but ended up selling it.
So, I'm looking for one just like it. In a perfect world, I'd love to find and restore that exact car, but I'm not sure I can find the VIN to verify it.
So, that's my story. I'm in no hurry on this. I want to get the right car, and I've already waited this long. A few more years won't make any difference.
In the mean time, I'm pleased to have found this board, and appreciate the opportunity to learn from you guys, and soak up some of the feeling of being around a 924 again.
Cheers!
Jeff |

Welcome aBoard, Jeff.
Nice that you are contemplating entering the world of 24 ownership for all the right reasons!
If you can't find the original Toofah Turbo, then be very circumspect in your purchase of one. Let's face it - they have little residual value yet labour costs for one will be the same as for a new 911! Parts will cost you just as much as for a new 997, so make sure you get a goodun'.
This board is littered with tragics like me who have/are/will spend small fortunes on something we probably should have walked away from years ago. However a Porsche is a Porsche. Once bitten with the bug you are hooked for life.

Condolences on your dad...but thanks for the great story You are in the right place to both find and restore the ideal 931. Have you checked out the registry? You can select model year and make (i.e. 1979 Turbo), so maybe by some small chance the car will be listed there?
In the meantime, if you can't find the original, what are your criteria? There are three pretty decent 931s available right now on Craigslist, all for reasonable prices, but needing various states of fixin' up. If you like the idea of a modified 931, this one would be at the top of my list. I tried to convince my wife to let me buy it, but she wouldn't have any of it. Adding a fourth 931 to the collection just didn't pass muster with the CFO!
Here are two more worth checking out...they may not be what you're after, given the mods, but we gotta try to save as many as we can!

Thanks for the replies, guys.
Pete, I agree with your comment. I've never restored a car before, but everything I've read says that you are far, far better off paying for good condition up front if you can find it.
ideola, thanks for the condolences, and the links. Its fun to start this process.
I'm going to see if by chance mom has some old paperwork that might include the VIN. Makes me wonder, how does one go about tracking down a car by VIN? All the transfers are public record, so somehow the paperwork should be out there. But this goes back far enough that all those records might not be computerized, and the paper files may get archived off. |

Hey Omaha, I have a black on black '81 931 that's going to be for sale this spring. It's in need of a replacement exhaust manifold, which I will do, runs great, starts hot or cold, and moves down the road quite well. Interior carpet is a nice black, and leather seats are in great shape. Dash sucks, but most do. _________________ '83 944 Track car.

Jeff,
Welcome aboard. There is a local support group for 924 nuts called the "Omaha Crew". We meet once a month for breakfast, usually the first Saturday, and some bench racing. I don't know any 931's for sale locally at the moment, but if you want to join the fun, PM me your e-mail address and I'll put you on the e-mail list for the monthly announcement of where we are meeting for breakfast.

Jeff,
You have been added to the e-mail list. I don't think anyone in the group has your Dad's old car. If it was Indian Red, no one has a turbo that color, and there are only two turbo's in the group at this time.
See you in February.
