I'm doing the Targa Rotorua this weekend, and will post results on Monday. Hopefully we can finish this time with out breaking anything!

We did some testing at a local track on Saturday, and have since replaced a 1/2 shaft and rebuilt the rear wheel bearings (left rear flogged out and broke the inner spacer), and had a front shock repaired again (rebuilt before the test day, but not done properly).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5aKwwz5_U0g Here's a video of the last run of the test day, showing what happens if you go in to a corner with the rear steering more than the front, and a front shock not working at all!

Took it very carefully after that corner! Holding the revs down to 7k too to make sure every things ok before I start thrashing it - will probably do the same in the rally, so I don't expect to finish too highly, just to finish.

Andrew, we MUST see some more pix of your car...just stationary ones like at the beginning of the video clip! Please?!

The holes cut in the rear bumper, is that strictly for lightening, or do they serve another functional purpose as well?

Nice vid, good luck in the race!!!

J1NX3D will no doubt be getting lots of photos during the rally.

Holes in rear bumper are purely for weight reduction (not that it makes much difference!). Front ones are functional though for the radiator.

The car was running well before the rally, so we trailered it down to Rotorua (about 4 hours from Auckland) in time for scruitineering and Documentation on Friday. Checked it thoroughly after unloading off the trailer and discovered the stick on front demister was not working (essential with early starts in the middle of winter, in what threatened to be a very wet weekend) Quickly patched it up with a bit of super glue and race tape and took the car to parc ferme and signed in.

The engine had a mysterious ignition failure waiting to start at the first stage, but was soon solved and ran faultlessly for the rest of the rally - I love rotaries! All went well on Saturday with only a few minor things to sort out at the service stops - retighten a front wheel bearing that had been replaced the day before, replace an accelerator spring that had broken in the middle of a stage (luckily we run two), and solve an oil leak in a cooler hose fitting.

The car went very well in the wet conditions, and really has potential when I finally learn how to drive

At the end of day one we were 2nd classic Porsche, 8th in our class, and 20th overall in the classic competition.

We made it back to the final overnight service and parked it up while we had some dinner and let the rain ease off. Disaster struck when we tried to restart it though, as the clutch wouldn't dissengage! After a mad panic we decided to withdraw for the night and find a dry garage to work on the problem through the night.

I was over the moon when I got a call from my crew chief to say it was fixed just as I was handing in the withdrawal form. Great news - no penalties!

Sunday morning started well again, and we even got the quickest time for a classic Porsche on the second stage. The third stage brought heartbreak again though as the clutch started playing up through the stage, then completely gave up the ghost on the way back to service. The crew worked on it for about an hour trying everything we could, but nothing fixed it. I suspect that it might be the spigot bearing binding on the input shaft, but won't know until we get the engine out over the next couple of weeks.

We could have finished the rally by starting it in gear each time we had to come to a complete stand still in the touring stages, but I decided not to risk damaging things further.

Had a lot of fun and spent a lot of time sideways, so even though we had to pull out part way through I'm happy with the progress.

Very Cool! Does Rotorua still have that rotten egg smell? Love the hot springs / hot mud pits, but man does that town smell funny. Still one of my favorite places I've ever visited.

Sure does! I didn't seem anywhere near as bad this time though - just the ocassional wiff every now and then. Great bumpy twisty roads all around there though because of the volcanic landscape.
