I never have problems with the oil filters coming loose.
Maybe it has something with the oil filters you are using, or the way that you are installing them.
Back when the cars were being made, there was some reportings of oil folters that failed. These filters turned out to be inferior generic branded filters that could not withstand the cold startup pressure of the cars that the Car Manufacturer's specc'd. The problem that I heard of was reported on Rabbits, Jettas, and 924s in the 70s. All of these cars use the same model of oil filter.
The other problem could be the way that you install your oil filters. Most oil filter manufacturers installation instuctions state that you should oil the gasket with fresh oil, then spin the filter on till the gasket makes contact with the mounting surface, then hand-tighten another 1/2 to 3/4 of another turn, and not to use a oil filter wrench.
On the 924, I sping the filter down by hand, then use a filter wrench to tighten another 3/4 to 1 turn.
No, I have never damaged the threads of the oil filter mount, and I have never had a filter come loose doing it this way. |

Strange problem Liz. Maybe you need to rough up and clean the mounting surface on the block. Just kind of a common sense guess though - I never had the problem.
Other than that, maybe the threads are stripped somewhat?
