Hey, to start off with i read all the required reading and searched through forums and i almost found what i am looking for but not quite. My transmissions only goes into 2/3 4/5. it will not even move left to go to 1/R. Ive been told it could be many things. it wont free up when i let the car run ( even for an hour or two). Maybe shift linkage? some one else said the "forks" could be bent. i just dont know. i was driving home and it just stopped. never been molested or anything.

Worn bushings in the shifter. Remove the shift knob cover and look inside. check the rubber bushings under the car for missing parts. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"

i replaced my bushings last summer, as they completely fell apart. My shifting was so sloppy it wouldnt go into 2nd or 4th.
I would say it is either the shift linkage bushings in the shift linkage coupler or the ball socket on the end of the guide rod. If you are going to replace one do both while you are in there. The improvement was significant when I completed mine.
Be carfeul not to shear the tappered bolt that holds the shift rod to the shift linkage coupler. I did and it turned it into a huge job. _________________ '80 924 M471,Wideband O2, Full coilover susp,23/19 sways,Bilstiens,KLA Strut Brace,Roll Bar,Test Pipe,BBS RS, Willwood BBK

True I had the same problem, was still able to shift into all gears but like trying to ain properly at which, and the first and specially reverse were hardest to engage, took the suspension down lowered the tranny and pulled the shifter rod out, just like a read on a thread, now the shifting is nice but sometimes when going into the second it feels like i sort of past next to the revers gear and feel a sligth zim or so, but still goes in nice if a till it to the rigth a little, cant say how mutch a procrastinated to do the job till I took the courage, Its not that hard, just time consuming to a few hours _________________ 1979 924 N/A, Snail Shell

so, I guess you missed the big sticky topic near the top of the page with nearly the same title?
Some bushings are on the lever, the rest are on the transmission/torque tube itself. _________________ Stefan

you migth want to check those first.

cant be said clearer, but I feel that its so sloppy that you cant shift because of the excess play where the bushings migth be missing, so yes check those up front first, then go under the car, lift it plenty, get a flash light, and have someone move the shifter from 4/5 and you should be able to see the linkage and the pin move freely, confirmation too your problem. _________________ 1979 924 N/A, Snail Shell
