Most of those hand made road and mountain bikes are worth thousands of dollars. Scary.
Cathy, your SUV stories are funny but I've got a story for you.
Recently there has been a rash of cars and SUV's coming in with roof damage. Do you know why? Because people strap their bikes on roof racks on top of their cars then forget its all up there. When they pull into their parking garages at work or at home, the bike and the rack is torn off of the roof of their cars. Not only are the roof and drip rails damaged (expensive!) but the Thule rack and their bicycles are destroyed too!
Often times the rack or the bikes are not covered under their insurance so the owners have to take the loss. One guy wanted me to repair his car and his bike that was damaged, but I had to decline because it was an alloy bike and I don't do much TIG welding.
Englishtown is in Jersey isn't it?

| I hate to admit it, but that happened to me...once. I wont have another roof rack. Check this out...I took a roof rack rail, mounted a piece of 1 in square alum tubing at each end. Welded a nut to a piece of 1 in flat bar. I slide the flat bar-nuts under the rear bumper where the access holes are for the bumper mounts. Then bolt the alum square tubing to the nuts, sandwiching the bumper. This gives me one rail running parallel to the rear bumper to carry one bike. No fuss, no muss and nothing touching the body. I glued rubber to the tubing where it touches the underside of the bumper also. |

Rob,
I hear ya on the roof rack thing...I've had a couple of friends forget the bikes were up there and KAPOW!!!... destroyed bikes, garage doors, dented car roofs.
I had a folding bike rack, a Thule, that hooked on to the edges of my trunk, and had big foam rubber pads on it to keep the paint from being scratched (used this on my Honda... yes, I owned an 84 Accord for several years). Needless to say, couldn't use it on my Bug. I would think those rear racks that stick out a mile would also make a body shop man drool... I can see backing into things with them would be hella easy!
Yes, Englishtown is in New Jersey. I was a Jersey girl for the first twenty years of my life. But like Bruce says,"it's a death trap/it's a suicide rap/you gotta get out while you're young." Which I did. |

Cathy -
Your comments brought back some memories.
I am a transplanted Jerseyite now living on the West Coast. I too watched Paula "Cha-Cha" Muldowney race AA/FC at Englishtown in the 70s. It during a time when the NHRA still allowed bleach to be used for burn-outs; and, Englishtown had night racing. Orange flames from the burn-outs and blue flames from the zoomie headers.
Who did your dad race for? Currently I am an assistant site coordinator for Threshold Sports -- the promoter of First Union Bike Week and the BMC race in S.F. I was there when Lance won the "Thrift Drug Triple Crown" and the million dollars. My idol of the era was Phil Anderson. Now he is the director sportif of a new Aussie team. Tomorrow, I am flying back east for the race on Wall Street this weekend.
BTW there is a tag available that you hang from your rear view mirror to remind you that you have a bicycle on your roof.

My dad never raced with a team. He used to do bike races in New Jersey... was a talented amateur. He also used to do these massive trips with my uncle (a Klein man), trips like from Red Bank to Stokes State Forest in one day. He's in his fifties now, so all he does is a little dirt road riding on a mountain bike for fun.
We used to go to Englishtown at night!!! We lived in Red Bank when I was a kid. Shirley Muldowney had a huge influence on me, I wanted to be her when I was five... her or John Glenn. |
