I'm thinking about buying an Audi! *ducks*
The whole story: I would like (perhaps need) a car just for general getting around and perhaps some travel over the summer. Something cheap (and I do mean cheap) is the highest priority, so to those that will undoubtedly suggest buying a 924... no, no and NO again. I have zero interest in paying several thousand dollars for a toofah and then having to dump large amounts of my time (which I don't have, at least not for a car) and large amounts of my money (which I don't have, at least not for a car) just to get the thing up to spec. and keep it there. Believe me, I'd love another one but it's out of the question. And before people start suggesting flying to the 'States, buying one cheap (which is probably a piece of junk anyway) and bringing it back across the border... no again! It's just too much, trust me, I've checked it out.
So, that's out of the way. Anyway, I came across an '87 Audi 5000 CD quattro Turbo. I'd like to know if anyone here might know any deal-stopper issues with this make/model of car? (forget the unintended acceleration crock, that witch-hunt has been and gone a decade ago). It has very high mileage at 230,000 miles but looks/is described as being well maintained and in good shape, which I always think is a good sign. It is reportedly 'Aircared' until late this year, which means it probably runs reasonably well. Anyway, I haven't been to see it in the flesh yet so I reserve judgement for now, but I know enough about cars in general to give it good once-over on the basics. So I'm not gonna jump in and buy it if it's obviously a horror. But I don't know anything specific about this make/model, especially that odd inline five-cylinder turbocharged engine and the quattro system. The asking price for the car is not hugely expensive, I'm not going to lose my life savings on it. At worst, if I bought it and it blew up the next day, I'd be angry, not destitute.
So, I guess I'm asking if -big if -the car is in good running condition, would those who've perhaps owned one or know them well suggest buying one? Any nightmares about them?
I'm a sucker for oddities... I'd really like to buy it. But again, I reserve judgement 'til I actually see it and I'd appreciate your input in the meantime. _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

What's the difference between a 20 year old Audi 5000 and a 20 year old 924 or 944? Not much would be my guess, both will create a large hole in your driveway in which to throw money.
Sounds like you want the ubiquitous "daily driver", sort of an appliance used to get from point A to point B. I have 2 of those, both boring and reliable. Vancouver must have the equivalent of the Ford F-150 in Edmonton. You know, the kind of used vehicle that litters the streets for $1000 and can be run for 5+ years on nothing but oil changes. I think that's what you should look for, think Dodge Neon, Chevy Cavalier, Honda Civic, etc, etc, etc.
I can understand wanting something odd and unique with character, but trying to combine that with the needs of a daily driver can end in heart ache.
Just my opinion. _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

The difference? Purchase price, pure and simple (the only 20-year-old 924's are 924S's, of course. Good luck even finding one here, and then for less many thousands of dollars).

You got it in one.

Vancouver has plenty of 'em all. And believe me, I'm lookin' at 'em! Hondas are a no-brainer (and probably what I'll end up with!). Toyotas, too. But the big ol' Audi stood out. Was just interested in it. Definitely will not buy it if it's a shocker. But looks good and the price is right... so far...

Agreed. Does anyone have an old Audi they use as a daily driver? Anyone..? _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

Hmmm. My daily driver gets water every 2 days and gas every 6 days. I don't know what's in the oil pan, nor do I care -- the cost of oil for an oil change is way more than what I paid for the car, and I paid about what the car is worth.
The car cost me $0 to purchase, and it's supposed to be a cheap, disposable car. It's an over 20 year old Hyundai Pony, so it ain't worth anything. _________________ 78 924 NA

Yeah I'd shy away from the Audi 5000 and aim towards the Honda personally. |

i drive an audi 80 CC. 1.6 liter diesel engine...slow as a snail...payed 2100 EUR for it...invested 100 and it still needs about 500 more to be in good shape...but it drives and it takes me to work and back every day.
Audis are very good cars ! you would be surprised to see how much porsche technology there is into Audis.
Dont buy a 2.2 turbo..or a 2.3 turbo......they are TURBO...so you know what that means...find a diesel car...or in the worst case a 2.3 gasoline....look for something simple not sophisticated...i did...and i'm happy with it. _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

Adapted from an old motor city adage:
"I'd rather be found pushing a german car than driving a rice-mobile"
No offense to people of Asian descent (my wife is half Chinese, btw)...unlike Asian women, I really dislike the appearance & character of most Asian vehicles.
Car looks to be in good shape. But it is an old turbo. If it smokes in the least, I'd walk away (given that you're specifically not looking for another project, that is). On the other hand, it does have AWD, which I'm sure will come in handy from time to time up there in the great white north. Tough call. Obviously, a personal visit will tell a lot. Take your camera and post pix! _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

I dunno about that. But I must admit to a slight Euro-bias. I've never owned a car that wasn't made in Germany...

With you 100% there.

Obviously one of the main reasons I'm interested in it, aside from novelty value. _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

But it's so wonderfully weird!
How about this one? It's not a turbo, it's an automatic and it's front-wheel-drive but on the plus side ( ), it's newer and more "normal"...
I could always buy one of these for about the same price _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

I own a 1987 Audi 5000 CS Quattro
It was damn fast and besides alternator and replacing worn out suspension components - it never left me stranded.
I bought a after-market chipped ECU for it and installed a 1.9 bar waste gate spring. Which nearly doubles the stock boost, as well as a single pass intercooler from a later 200 20v Turbo.
I miss driving the car - I sacrficed it to the Audi gods to bring one of my 4000's back to life and make it faster (smaller lighter car with even more power with the 5k's engine and more mods)
Weak points on the car is the climate control system (bad fan and flap control motors), and the power steering rack.

Thanks moone924, I'd forgotten you had one. I talked to the bloke on the phone this'arv and he said the two major problems with it are the drivers seat heating doesn't work and... da da da-da... the power steering rack leaks! (although he swears its not bad)
We'll see... _________________ '80 924 Turbo |
