I was looking through Peter Morgan's 924/944/968 book this morning, and found the following cryptic passage:

Peter Morgan, page 121 wrote:
The oil spray tube. . .can break off. . .better Porsche specialists can advise on an easy modification which improves the lubrication to the Turbo's cylinder head.

Um, like what?

IIRC mgatlag told me his guys who'd done his engine had replaced the plastic fitting with some kind of threaded fitting.

I've not yet had any issues with the stock plastic one, though I do use a new one...

The engine that came in my 924 when i bought it had a cracked plastic elbow. And I can say that the wear on the camshaft was severe. A better solution wuld be nice....

I inferred from the passage that he was talking about changing something more than just the elbow, but I could be mistaken.

This is what happens when writers leave readers hanging like this. This 'mod' sounds like rumour he can't remember the specifics about - but assuming it's true based on racer's experience - the existing plastic piece seems fine to me. The manual says 'check' and 'replace if necessary'. A permanent elbow there? Not overly important to me. Replace the plastic piece and forget about it.

I am not sure i'd buy a modified camshaft lubrication tube for that head.

This mod really would not be very hard. You would tap the hole where the plastic elbow goes for a threaded swageloc elbow. Then using the swageloc portion crimp the ferrel down on the oiling tube. By using this particular kind of elbow it is still easily removable. Mcmaster Carr carries all of this stuff (e.g. p/n 5305K462). The real question is how necessary is this mod?

Yes. Because I just spent 3 weeks waiting for that elbow, and it's still not here.

A metal elbow would be nice.

Be careful of the expansion rate of whatever you decide to use, cracking that cap will trash the head.

I don't think it's about the elbow, it's about this:

That's my engine about two weeks ago.

Aha! - the infamous tube cracking off at the end trick. Not uncommon enough..
Leaves you with ample lube of cyl #4's lobes-tappets, but much less for the rest, + lower overall oil pressure.
