Hello,
I recently purchased a 1978 924 with the intent to fix it up and after inital inspection i thought the car looked worn but solid. After taking posession and getting a better look at the underneath it looks like it was pushed off a cliff then repainted. Does anyone have pictures of a stock 1978 924 that i can compare my car to, and at what degree of damage should i scrap this car and start over with a new car?
Also... besides being pulled from a lake why would i have 6 inches of water in the right passenger side wheel well.
Thanks,

If you are referring the the space in the trunk area behing the rear wheel being full of water, it should have a drain at the bottom. It can fill up if there is a leak in the hatch area and the drain hole is plugged. Over time rain water could fill it up. The latches for the rear hatch have drain hoses that route rain water. If these hoses are disconnected, broken or missing, the water will go from the latch hole right into your trunk.
Is the underside of your car bent up? Or is it just dirty or rusty? _________________ 87 924s

Yes, that is the space that i am referring. I did see the hoses but have not had time to figure out where they went or what was wrong. I did wet-vac out the water.
Everything onthe underside looks repainted, i do see areas that look bent and some that look like rust painted over. The biggest area of concern( i can not find the exact name of the part in the manual) look to be two frame rails that run along each side underneath, about a foot in from the bottom of the doors. they look bent and out of shape.
Thanks,

No need for alarm. Your bent up box sections mean some dumbass jacked, put the car on the lift, or placed jackstands in the wrong place. Probably more than once. If there are any 924s that don't suffer from this to some extent (especially Gen One), I'd like to see them.
I think the main concern is resealing any broken undercoating, which it sounds like someone already tried to do. I'm sure there are plenty of other things on your car needing your attention. . .get to work!
Good luck,

| If the car runs and drives reliably, put some miles on it and figure out what your version of the ideal one is. Then save your pocket change and a bit more and buy something better later. Throwing good money after a bad car is a mistake i made a few times, like new fenders on a clapped out BMW 2002 that should have been scrapped. |

i put my jackstands on each side of the car behind the rear wheels, on these circular jobies. at least when im working on the rear. seems to work fine, and i dont think its damaging the frame. the manual didnt exactly specify where to put the stands _________________ The TINMAN and his TINCAN

There should be 2 drain holes in each of those rear side saddle compartments behind the wheels - one at the very bottom (that should be open and cleared). -And one near it, but through the inner side - this one should have the drain line from the rear latch going through it. Someone had my latch drain line going through the lower hole, which of course blocked it, so the area would accumulate and hold some water, and that accellerated rusting in the area (which finally got repaired last year). Obviously don't use that rearmost circular jack point if there's rust in the area - and don't use it with jackstands that aren't either cupped (circular) or have a pin sticking straight out the top. _________________ "..it's made in Germany.
