Help I just bought a 77 924 and it hasnt run in a couple of years. Got it running and the oil light stays on, the pressure gauge is not reading any thing. Take the filler cap off and it looks dry in there. Its not the pump is it?

Could be. I believe there's a pressure relief valve built into the oil pump. If that's malfunctioning, it might be relieving all the pressure. If you have the wrong oil filter installed - that could be the problem. Many have check valves built in. If you have the wrong one and it has a check valve that works in the opposite direction that's required for your car, it will be stopping all the oil flow. I'm assuming you put oil in or at least checked it.

Yep sure did! It was on before and after I changed oil and filter, thought maybe filter was plugged or something stupid like that. Good thing I did too cause it was full of varnished fuel>

Sounds like your treading on some serious engine destroying territory. How long did it run without oil pressure? I would not put any more fire to this engine untill I positively saw the oil pressure up. Like the idea of the pressure relief bypass being stuck open. Ditto the wrong oil filter. Once these are sorted out, I would consider finding a way to turn the oil pump without the ignition one. You could remove the spark plugs, ground the coil wire, and simply crank the engine. Maybe spray some light oil in the the cylinders. If pressure does not come up in 10 or fifteen second, stop and reconsider.

Take the valve cover off, and check the camshaft oil delivery tube, and the plastice elbow that connect it to the cylinder head.
The plastic elbow shrinks with age, and breaks, leaving the camshaft without an oil supply, and allowing the engine oil pressure to leak out and not lubricate the engine.
Vibration casuses the camshaft oil supply tube to crack, and and break again resulting in the loss of oil supply to the camshaft, and oil lubrication problems throughout the engine.
The oil pressure gauge and warning light work off of a sender on the rear of the engine, when the oil is not changed regularly, the sender gums up, and may not read, or get stuck on a high reading. Consider getting a seperate mechanical oil pressure gauge to verify that you actually have problem and not a bad sender. |
