Well, after yesterday, the #66 BMW's got the championship pretty much in the bag. Heavy rain in qualifying, we had rains on, he forgot his (duh!), so we smoked the field, qualified 3rd overall, 5 seconds in front of the next ITB car, with Doug in the BMW 9 seconds back in 9th.
Pulled out for the pace lap of the race - smoking pretty good. Was trying to limp around to the pits, then my crew chief Gregg called on the radio and told me to park it, he saw flames!!! Hustled to a corner station, they attended, but the fire put itself out on shutdown no worries, so no need to pop a bottle. Just sit back and watch the race!
Doug cruised to an easy win at a very slow pace, well 2-3 seconds off the pace. We got, officially, a DNS (did not start). Zero points, and not even a DNF. We also caused 3 pace laps, due to the question about fire, and loss of communications at the corner (cornerworker ran to the car with the firebottle... without remembering that he was plugged in to the landline, ripping it out of the socket!).
Got a parking ticket too - wrong way on a one way street, parking in a tow-away zone, and pioneering wilderness trails (with the return trip across the grass)! We'll have to scan that and post a picture...
Result was that an oil line had popped free of its brackets and rested on the header, eventually burning through and leaking oil onto the header, for it to smoke and burn. We replaced the oil line yesterday evening.
Going out for emergency practice this AM, make sure the new hose is happy, then we'll be, once again, starting from the back and charging the field for the race! Should be exciting... again. Oh, yeah, the BMW we're hunting... well, he's got back brakes and his tires are nearly shot again... we've never killed our brakes, and our tires, thanks to all of our DNF's and rain races, are in good shape still. So there's a chance we could catch him, given the pace he ran yesterday, and challenge... _________________ Vaughan Scott

Pretty much!
Sunday went way better. Started DFL for the first race, tore through the field just like at Mid-O, and started closing in on the leader (Doug in the BMW). Then the car got really loose (was kinda loose to start with), and I started falling off, such that the 3rd place Rustang caught up to me and was working me over. Held onto 2nd for the finish, though.
The afternoon Feature race was much better; I'd out-qualified Doug, who had corded tires - this year's Hoosier R6's are wearing like CRAP!!! We're lucky to get 3 weekends out of them, it seems. I've still got plenty of tire, I think in part by being able to heat-cycle them a little better, in part because the 924 is pretty easy on tires compared to most racecars. So not only was I 3rd overall, I also had one RX7 (IT7) between us. Of course, the RX7 nailed the start and got around me, so Doug was on my ass, with the black Rustang right behind him.
The RX7 pulled out a bit of a lead, but I was able to close back up to him after a couple of laps. Just as I was looking forward to playing w/ him, he once again pulled over on the front straight to let Doug and I by. So Doug tried chasing me around for a while, but wasn't really any faster except in one corner - not really a useful one to pass in. In spite of putting on two new tires for the race, I was able to hold him off fairly well, as his car was still loose and fighting for grip.
We had, in fact, disconnected the rear swaybar for the Feature race, to ensure that I would have enough grip and confidence in the car to be able to be pushed hard all race long, as we knew Doug would be behind and fighting hard. It turned out to be the right change, as the car came perfectly to me after a few tough laps initially, where it didn't quite want to turn well.
Then about halfway through the race, both Doug and Bob (in the RX7) disappeared; Doug dropped a cylinder coming onto the back straight (probably due to a broken rocker, a common problem in the BMW's) and Bob lost a wheel - snapped hub, it seems. We pushed hard for a few more laps, just to keep the pace and effort, and gap to #2, then eased off for the last lap to cruise to an easy win!
I've got some good video from the first Sunday race, and though I haven't yet checked the Feature video, the first half should be pretty good if there weren't any technical glitches... _________________ Vaughan Scott

Cheers! It's all about Big Balls and No Brains - just jam the car in there and hope it sticks! Sometimes it doesn't, then we end up in the grass!
Gratuitous checker photo, thanks to John G:
