Well, yours truly broke down and bought a G-TECH PRO performance meter. I got it as never used on ebay from a fellow who got it during a tire promotion. Basiclly, this clever little device has an extremely sensitive accelerometer in it, and can tell you h.p., 1/4 speed, 0-60, g forces, and more! I bought it because I wanted to substantiate modifications and not pay for a dyno run every time I tweak something.

I got it chiefly for horse power measurements. The G-TECH measures rear wheel horses and is accurate to plus or minus 1 h.p. with a real world resolution of 3 h.p. Of course wind drag plays a role so you want to take your runs in no more than 2nd gear to keep your windage down.

I took my car to the landfill scales and with 3/4 tank of gas it weighed 2680 lbs.
I went to a deserted flat road nearby and did five launches like they suggest. To my delight, on the best run, the h.p. measurement was exactly what I hoped it would be, 92 h.p. My 81 is rated at 115 and if you take away 20% for drivetrain losses...bingo 92! Jim Pasha in an article on the 924 engine states rear wheel h.p. should be 95 for the late models.

So far I am very pleased. I doubt if my drag skills or the devices sensitivity is accurate enough for very small increases in h.p gains, but at least I can mark off major increases. But you never know. It's a little hard on the clutch, those power launches, so I think I will reserve it for major incremental jobs like the Franco or a cam, and not every time I turn a screw or change a spark plug. If you want to know more, go to http://www.gtechpro.com. Summit has them for $139 and free shipping.
