Well, I got the head off the car today. So much for a burnt valve. The valves all looked fine. However the melted piston and head kinda sucked. The head is a total write off as well as the #2 and #3 piston. #2 is the worst. Not even sure if the block is rebuildable as it looks like the piston might be a tad canted to the side. I guess what happened when it misfired due to the plug wire it blocked the cat (it was melted inside) and must have built up tremendous heat in the head. funny tho, the valves all looked fine, if one of them had of burnt it might be a different story. Not sure where to go from here now. I might see if the engine is rebuildable and see if I can round up another head. Oh well.....time to go shopping I guess . _________________ 1979 N/A 924 |

That sucks. Seems rather odd on an NA motor to have so much damage. Ask about parts on the Parts forum.
Got any pictures?

Sorry to hear about your pistons, dude.
You might be better off getting hold of a complete engine from a breakers. You can then choose how much of it you want to rebuild, but if it's ant good, it might be as well just to drop it in. _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

| If you weren't in Canada, I'd send you the spare bare head I have here for free. Actually I'd consider it, but I'm concerned about shipping costs, customs, etc.... |

I've got pistons if you need them, both 8.5:1 NA and 9.3:1 Euro NA in good usable condition with NEW ring sets included.
I also have a complete NA head that looks like new under the valve cover. I was holding on to it just for the mint tappets and cam but if you need it I'll let it go. Don't know about the valve faces etc yet as it is still on an engine but it looks like it may have been rebuilt prior to the car meeting it's doom.
If you end up needing a block I would just buy a running enigne from someone (wish I had one for you) but the blocks are notoriously stout so hopefully that will work out. |

To me the block looks fine, my neighbour seems to think there is a bit of a cant to the melted piston and perhaps there is. To me it doesn't look like the cylinder is scored or anything and it also doesn't feel scored. But there is no way the head would be able to be machined back, it's even melted up behind where the tip of the spark plug sticks into the chamber. _________________ 1979 N/A 924 |

I know, I drove by the A&W in Woodside tonight and all the guys are getting their old and classics out for the summer, I was looking at a Triumph Spitfire ( am I allowed to say that on here ???) lol . But I would really like to get this one running again. Hey Nemises , how about that head and pistons? pm me with a price if you like and roughly what shipping might be and I'll ponder it. _________________ 1979 N/A 924 |

I also have the euro distributor to go with the head and that completes the upgrade I believe. This way you can turn that frown upside down with an extra 15 hp after you sort this mess out.
Food for thought...
$150 for pistons and new in box ring sets
$150 for complete head
$55 shipping to NS, CA
Just let me know if you need them man. I would love to help yet another board member get back on the fun side of the 924 island. |

Sorry repost...and I was trying to get it to go while you were typing your reply Kool so I missed the PM part.
By the way Triumphs are cool, so we'll let it slide. I bet there are more than a handful of guys here that have owned a Triumph in their day. Me, X-19. What a fun car. Too bad they turn to rust buckets prematurely.

Ok ok , I'll have photos of the melt down up on here tonight. My digicam isn't the greatest in the world as it's only 1.3 mp and I've never posted photos on here before so bear with me. The piston looks like it was made of wax and just melted, and the corresponding part of the head looks the same. Oddly enough the valves look completely undamaged....go figure. _________________ 1979 N/A 924 |

The melting point of aluminum is considerably lower than whatever metal the valves are made of.

Does anyone have any theories of what might have caused this.......
It seems ironic that a couple weeks ago we were discussing "earing" the timing and 924racer said it was a no no and could burn up the valves.
Now don't forget that Kool had a plug wire off for only a short drive and shouldn't have cause that kind of damage. It wouldn't even make sense to! _________________ 1976 924
