What would the Porsche community think if i keep my 924S (Euro edition) but go off and buy a 1994 Mustang GT and turn that into my daily driver? So far ive gotten negative feedback from somone who has a 83 944 and he told my friend who is currently in college at NTI that something was wrong with me, and my friend was like there is nothing wrong with going from a Porsche to a Mustang. My friend did not like Porsches until he drove my car (i did not let him abuse it) and i did not want a mustang till i drove his car.
I mean it would help me out with this mustang if i sold my Porsche afterwards but i really don't want to part with it because its my first car period and its was my original Dream car, well actully it was a white 87 944 but i got a 87 Black 924S so im not complaining they look almost the same the S is faster.
The S has given me some reliability problems untill i dropped over 5 grand into it, so nothing should go wrong with it (Knock on wood). Well my dad did that as far as money, because parts were so expensive.
So here is my question:
What would you do if you were 19 (again for some) and you decided that you felt liek a loser because you still lived at home with mommy and daddy and u decided to move out and pay rent and you have a job and you want a car you can depend on so you decided on an american car (Mustang) what would you do with your Porsche because if something goes wrong with it your daddy is not going to pay for it ne more?

hmm dude, I don't think its for anyone to judge what you use for daily driving and what you want to do with your 924S, but let me tell you this, I owned a '77 924 when i was 18, i moved out of parent's house and i just couldn't afford it anymore as it had an electrical problem that cost me over 1500 and no one could figure it out, it just wouldn't start. Also i didn't know very much about cars back then, so i sold it. For 5 years I've been kicking myself in the arse for that. All i had to do is keep it and work on it slowly, learn it myself and fix it. But i didn't. About 3 months after i sold it, i got a well paying job and that just made me kick myself in the arse even more. Now i have an '84 944 that i picked up very cheap 20 miles away from where i live. It didn't run at all, I had to replace whole fuel system including gas tank and rip the engine apart down to headgasket - I am more knowledgeble about what i do now, but its still all self tought. I guess the point i am trying to get accross is that no one is going to stop you from doing what you might have to do, and no one is going to make fun of you and think of you any less, its life and it makes us do some weird things sometimes - just make sure you are not going to regret it - just remember you can always park that car for next 5 years in the garage - finish school and then get at her. Just make sure if you are going to park it, you drain your gas - replacing fuel system is a bitch. _________________ Dan |

I took the bus (and my feet) from when I left home at 18 to when I was able to afford my first new car at 26. Six years of University and lots of partying were packed into those years, best fun of my life and it had nothing to do with cars. I'm 19, in college, and I have an 87 924S. I love it and I take good care of it. So far it has been very good to me and I haven't had to spend a ton of money to keep it running and I can only hope it stays that way until I get a good job and can pay for anything that might break. I gotta say though, it's not really practical for me as a college student but I don't plan on getting rid of it anytime soon. I have driven mustangs and they a lot of fun too. I'm sticking with my 924S but there's nothing wrong with a mustang. I am very glad that I have a nice car at 19 but I'm not worried about my next car because after college I will be making a lot more than I am now and I can have an even better car. _________________ 87 924S |

Like others have said, I wouldn't care what that other fellow said about going from a Porsche to a Mustang, if you think it is best for you then do it.
Since you did ask "What would you do...?" then I will tell you what I would do, but I won't get all ticked off if you don't do it. I would keep the Porsche and get a used Honda or Toyota as my reliable car, but only IF I could afford insurance on both vehicles. If I had to trim down to one and felt that the Porsche wasn't reliable enough, then I would opt for the Mustang.

I agree with Chrenan, get a nice mountain bike and save your money to travel. Life goes by so goddamn quickly, and you need to see Europe while you are young enough for youth hostels. . .
You will soon discover the real winners are those who break the mold, and have real adventures, not those who labor at minimum wage jobs to keep up a car payment.

It seems everyone is over looking the obvious, if (as I understand it) you are still keeping the Porsche and just using a mufftang as a daily driver, then do it - anything to keep the 924 alive longer. Keep it in a garage, start it every week - run it around the block - whatever. Go beat up a mufftang and get that out of your system. That way, when you do graduate from college and/or eventually move out and begin to sustain your own life, you'll have a little jewel to take with you.
Hell, I had a 1979 Plymouth Arrow at your age, and was happy with that $300 investment (later sold it for $900). So park (but pay attention to) the Porsche and use anything else as your daily driver - impress your dad (not the girls) and get a Yaris for it matters - just save the Porsche. _________________ 924.org (no time to complete)
