|

| Hi there and greetings from newbie in sunny Gibraltar! Quick question which might have been burnt to death by now: I am replacing the ignition leads in my 924 with Jacobs Energy Core (they lay claim to be the best) and also the coil with a new Bosch. I have seen a Permatune replacement ignition box for what seems a very reasonable £160. Is aybody familiar with these and could I expect any improvement in performance? BTW, the car has not been giving me any problems in this department and this is just part of my ongoing search for that little bit extra. Thanks. |

Thanks for your reply, John. But have you actually checked it out in your car or anybody who u know has actually installed it in theirs? The only way to really know is by first hand experience?! |

I'm using a Permatune in my ITB car, but I agree, no real sense of any added performance over the stock unit. _________________ Vaughan Scott

Hope you don't mind a "self-quote" instead of typing it all out again..

Bosch doesn't even seem too fond of CDI.. They say, "For many applications, the spark duration of 0.1 - 0.3 ms is too brief to ensure that the air-fuel mixture will ignite reliably. Thus CDI is only designed for specific types of engine, and today [c1993] its' use is restricted to a few applications only, as transistorized ignition systems have virtually the same performance. CDI is not suited for aftermarket installations." |
That's from the Bosch Automotive Handbook <click>. Good book, very compact, but 852 pages (3rd edition) covering a wide range of topics (+ some topics you've probably never heard of). The current (6th edition) is 1232 pages. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

HarryOK, do you have the stock points ignition or the Bosch box? I know a lot of you folks across the Atlantic got the antiquated points ignition.
If that's the case, then switching to a permatune ignition would very likely have some performance, economy, and definitely reliability improvements - no constant setting/replacing points!

Thanks for the feedback, guys. Looks likeI'll save my pennies for something more worthwhile.
BTW Nick, it's a 1982 NA, so Bosch ignition box |

| Please do not support Jacob's electronics. They used to be a very good company that sold a sealed ignition box with an inherrant problem of blowing an irreplaceable fuse. They used to replace the ignition boxes even if they were out of warranty because of this flaw. They were bought out and now their customer service is the worst. I spent $400 on one of their systems and had to throw it away after only using it for a year. Go with MSD if you are looking to buy an ignition system. |
