I gave it a quick wipe, but nothing major, it's not a show car. _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

This is a different car to the yellow one in your avatar, right?
Are you going to keep both going or is this one to be a replacement? _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

Same car as in the avatar, the engine bay is the original colour, which I hope to return the car to eventually. _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

Oh right - I can just see a bit of yellow in the top corner of the picture.
It should look pretty wicked in black. _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

OK, I had the car on the road for the first time with the new engine last night. Just as a reminder of the general modifications over stock:
Euro Race "Big Valve" head
Stage 1 cam (mild profile, one step up in agressiveness from stock)
Euro pistons (9.3:1)
Audi 5000 throttle body
Cat delete
In addition to this, all other items that touch the engine are new except for the alternator (i.e., starter, clutch, mounts, etc etc).
Setting the ignition timing was a real pain. I seem to remember with my old engine, the range of twist on the distributor where the engine would run OK was pretty large. With this setup, I had to adjust it over and over, the range where the engine would run OK was tiny, and the "sweet spot" was really that, one spot. Finally got it and it ran amazing. The idle sounds amazing, a really nice burble, a little lumpier than before. On the run, the car is noticeably quicker, very smooth at higher rpm (likely from not having a broken exhaust side mount), just feels great all round, I am very happy with the improvement. Oil pressure and temperature were good at idle and on the run, no fuel, oil or coolant leaks that I could see during tuning or after shutdown. Got out for a drive for an hour, ran up and down the gears the whole time, lots of acceleration and deceleration (in gear) for the whole time.
Now for the bad news, I think I need to adjust my clutch, please see this thread:

Excellent looking engine build, glad it is working out for you and all but the prior discussion you are referring to was about variable cam gears, not adjustable, big difference.
I agree with some others that a header, and an aluminum flywheel would have been nice touches, but so would other things if you were going for more power.
Congrats are in order. _________________ MJ

Ahh, that makes much more sense, variable timing gear, not adjustable, my mistake.
Yeah, I certainly didn't go as extreme as I could have, but it hopefully won't be my last 924 build up, so I plan on going a little farther on the next one, not up to the mad scientist super charger / turbo stuff that you guys do, but maybe a little more (stroker, lightened flywheel, EFI, etc.). _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |
