Guy's,

Do any of you have any thoughts on the pro's or cons of the different types of LSD available? For example, plate type(ZF) vs torque biasing (Quaife)
I am looking at a pure race set up, so no road considerations to bear in mind.I would like your experiance before i go spending my hard earnt ££'s

Many Thanks,

Steve

Steve
No expert (as you know!) but my understanding is that the zf plate type will give a fixed lock whilst the torsen type will sense the load on the driven/undriven wheel and distribute drive acccordingly.
What I have heard is that the zf type is a lot stronger but much more violent and will give more understeer, more so again when wet. Also it will wear out and need an overhaul.

The torsen diff is described as something you cant really feel working by at least one of the speed guys. He said it was very smooth.

I believe one downside of the torsion diff is that if a wheel is lifted it doesnt work too well and can break if that wheel thumps back to earth whilst hard on the throttle .

The older racers seemed to choose zf for reliablity.

Me I chose phantom grip for cheapness...it is working though for about £300 dollars.
Cheers
Simon

hi dont know if this is any help ,but here goes .Back in the early 1980 i rallyed a chrysler sunbeam here in the uk [front engined rear wheel drive] i fitted a quafe a.t.b l s d i chose this because once fitted you could forget about it there were no clutch plates to wear and you didnot have to usr special l s d oils in the diff .I ran thi diff for six years befor selling the car during that time i had no problems with it and it did the job for me .At the time alot of people over here were unsure because it was a new consept and the saulsbury l s d was cociderd the vouge , well ive come back in to rallying [this time with a 924] and thats what i fancy just dont fancy new prices , will have to look for a s/h one trev
