Gotta do this. The haynes manual seems a bit vague on the matter. Anyone have any hints or better explanations?

thanks!

Hate to say it, since it's no less vague, but I adjusted mine to put the engagement point where it feels best for me for heel-and-toe-ing...

Vaughan,

What I'm confused about is what exactly is to be done inside the bell housing. Did you adjust that or just the two locknuts on the cable itself?

Take a good long look at the picture in Haynes. It shows how they measure the adjustment distance. As I recall, they measure from the cable pivot to the bracket next to the adjustment bolts, but it has been a while ago, so do not take this as gospel. You need to hold a wrench on the top nut, then loosen the bottom nut with another wrench. They mention something about pedal free play. This is the distance the pedal travels downward before you can feel the resistance of the clutch.

I had lots of fun with my clutch, so if you need any specifics, you can email me directly (or chat on ICQ would be easiest).

Once you have your clutch installed and all, adjust the arm so that there is 130mm (or what ever the measurement is as stated in Haynes) from the tip of the point on the end of the clutch lever to the cable mount. To do this, you need to loosen the bolt that holds the lever so you can adjust it (you may have to adjust and tighten many times to get it right). the point you are adjusting for is where the throw-out bearing just engages on the pressure plate. You will need to lift up on the lever until you feel it get to this point, then measure the distance. Once you have the clearance set at 130mm, bolt the cable in place and adjust the cable to your liking (so the pedal is always holding the lever up, but so there is about 10mm of movement until the throughout bearing touches the pressure plate).

I got to install and uninstall the clutch on my car a total of 3 times because the clutch would never disengage, turned out to be a warn area on the drive tube which was holding the clutch to the flywheel even though the pressure plate was disengaging. Probably spent 30 hours under there changing the clutch, so I now consider myself an expert at the cable clutch.

I tweaked mine by adjusting the cable, with the locknuts, adding some washers at the firewall to take up some slack from cable stretch...

The distance in the Haynes manual between the bracket and whatever made no sense on my car. Maybe later models don't follow the rule. I just adjusted mine for coreect free play at pedal. You can get a better feel for the engagement point if you push with your hand instead of your foot.

Thanks guys,

It sounds like 138mm was applicable on the haynes car only and I should just adjust by feel.

'82 owners manual says:
Porsche 924: Clutch pedal play should be approx. 3/4" to 1" or 20 to 25mm.
