Hi Guys

My 924 has no cowl on the back of the alternator to cool it.
Has anyone else ran there Porsche without the cowl and not experienced any problems?

Aren't you supposed to have an air scoop and an air hose leading to the alternator? You can see it here between the windshield soap container and the hood latch:

That way you dont need a cowl, unless cowl is the thing that the air hose attaches to.

I dwould like to know to,I dont have the really big metal piece that covers the engine bay under the motor, I think its for airodynamics, If you have that on I think its a good idea to have the alt. scoop hooked up as there is no fresh air with that big piece of metal covering the bottem of the engine bay, no air drafts up into the engine bay..to provide cooling so it could get critical there.

Matt, i have the air scoop and the air hose these should conect to a cowl which covers the back of the alternator.
At the moment i don't have a cowl so i wondered if the alternators were prone to over heating.
I want to carry on using my 924 until i get one i just want to know that it's safe to do so.

Okay, my guess is that it would indeed overheat without the cowl. I have the scoop all hooked up and I don't have the shield below the engine bay, yet mine still seems to get too warm every once in a while (like if I'm stopped at a traffic light on a hot day).

Opps

The scoop hose and cowling are necessary temperatures will be too hot without the additional air the alternator will not start smoking and die right away however he lifespan of the alternator will be greatly reduced

What about the belly pan? Does it serve any purpose? Does the car run cooler without it?

Re: the belly pan

Yes, the car should run cooler with the belly pan. The theory is that air passing underneath the car will suck out engine bay air as it whizzes past. Makes sense although I've never done a before-and-after test of engine temperatures.
