My parents really want me to drive a car with an airbag but most older porsches don't have airbags. Do you think I could install the system from say a new 89 944 into an older 86 944? Are the wheel hubs for SRS wheels the same for non-SRS hubs? Also, perhaps maybe theres an aftermarket srs kit available, not specifically for porsches but a universal one that could be retrofitted? I probably sound insane for asking this kinda stuff but just please give me the feedback on whether it is doable.Thanks.

No, air bags cannot be retrofitted into any car.

I've found a universal system called the SRS-40 airbag system put out by out by Breeds technology which is now key safety inc. They use a mechanical triggering device instead of using sensors. So it does seem it can be done.

here is a website talking about this product

Did you read the entire news article?

The system that the article details is not the orignal air bag system retro-fitted. It consists of a special steering wheel with sensor/s contained inside, and will ONLY work on cars that the system has already been tested on. It must be assembled by a trained technician.

The retrofit system is not the same thing as installing the system from a later car or car from the same period that had optional air bags.

Breed apparantly became key safety.
I didn't see any info on steering wheel airbags though.
It became legal to retrofit airbags in 1998.

i think it might be cheaper and easier to just find a late model 944 w/ airbags already installed.
